Eden Arts Artspeak Series
One of New Zealand’s leading comic artists will be part of the line up of six speakers at the annual Artspeak of Eden
Arts.
Each year in the weeks leading up to Artist in Eden Day when forty leading artists draw and paint Mt Eden there are a
series of artist’s talks.
This year the six are, Tobias Berger, Justin Boroughs, Glen Hayward, Dylan Horrocks, Phil Rooke, Peter Siddell.
Dylan Horrocks is one of New Zealand’s leading comic artist and cartoonists. He has had a carrier as a political
cartoonist with strips in The Listener in the early 1990’s.
He produced the graphic novel Hicksville, a graphic story of a small NZ town which was originally published in Canada
and has since been translated and published in over a dozen countries.
He has worked for the American company who publish Batman and Superman and was for a time drawing Batwoman.
Tobias Berger is the director of Artspace, the leading contemporary art gallery in the country. He is leaving shortly to
take up a position at a similar gallery in Hong Kong. His experience of working in New Zealand over the past years have
included controversial judging of art awards and ground breaking shows at Artspace.
Glen Hayward is a successful young artist who two years ago won the Mazda Emerging Artists Award. His carefully crafted
replicas of objects have been in several exhibitions including a “window work” at the Auckland Art gallery.
Much of Phil Rooke’s work has been done at a community level producing work in community centre and libraries after
discussion with members of local community.
Several of his work adorn the jubilee Building in Parnell.
Peter Siddell and Justin Boroughs are major artists working in the realist tradition. Most of their work is of urban
areas, particularly Auckland.
All the Talks will be held in the Mt Eden Bowling Club Rooms in Epsom Ave at 7pm
