Katchafire brings reggae groove to Zoo
Auckland Zoo will be suffused with the smooth, well-seasoned sounds of Katchafire on Sunday 20 February (from 6pm to 9pm).
New Zealand’s top reggae band, Katchafire have enjoyed immense success with their albums Revival and Slow-Burning, and singles such as Giddy Up (the biggest selling single of 2002).
The Hamilton-based band formed in 1997, its members brought up on a lifetime of reggae, soul, R and jazz, particularly the classic late 70s-early 80s era of radio friendly reggae, best exemplified by Bob Marley.
Katchafire will be joined by six-piece dub and reggae band Mr Pink; and funky urban groovers The Exiles, who blend hip hop, electronica and orchestral sounds.
The eight-piece band are on the road 49 weeks of the year, and their exhilarating live performances of their original pop-reggae tunes have won fans throughout New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific.
Katchafire is just one of a diverse range of artists bringing the hottest Kiwi music to the Zoo this summer, in the ASBZooMusic series. Katchafire is followed by Goodshirt and Nesian Mystik in a series that runs until Saturday 5 March, the latter two concerts being part of AK05 Auckland Festival. Each concert features great guest artists.
“Music at the Zoo has always been popular and it is such a unique and enjoyable environment,” says Auckland Zoo Events Co-ordinator, Jackie Sanders. “We are delighted to have ASB Bank back on board supporting the series for the second year running, and are excited to have top Kiwi acts from such diverse musical genres.”
Most of the animals will still be up in the warmth of the summer evenings, so come early and hang out in Auckland's best park with your family and friends. Bring a picnic, or pre-order a Zoo Hamper from the Visitors’ Centre (phone 09 360 3805), for $30, $45 or $70. You can also purchase dinner from Darwin's café or the BBQs we'll have set up near the Band Rotunda. Darwin's is licensed, and we'll also have a fully licensed bar set up in the grounds, where a range of Coopers Creek wines will be available.
Tickets for Katchfire’s concert and other ASBZooMusic events can be pre-purchased through Ticketek, or from the zoo. With limited capacity, and tickets already selling, we recommend advance booking. Tickets: Adults $20, Children (4+yrs) $10, Students and Seniors $15, a 3-ticket pass $50 (one person attending three concerts). Ticket prices include admission to the zoo.
