Creating Energy
Images of pylons, light streaks and even a pregnant woman are all part of a new photographic exhibition entitled,
Creating Energy.
The exhibition, at the ArtsPost Gallery in Hamilton, features the winning works from the 2004 Mighty River Power
Photographic Competition and is open to the public from February 8 – 27.
More than 200 entries from throughout the country were received for the Competition, which was open to secondary and
tertiary students and non-professional photographers across four themes: landscape, documentary, portraiture and
contemporary art.
The entrant’s came up with creative and unique ways to portray the theme of “Creating Energy”.
Professional photographer and one of the judges of the Competition, Patrick Reynolds says the quality of entries and the
standard of presentation were very encouraging.
“We were particularly impressed with the entries in the Secondary section and how students interpreted the brief to
present their own ideas.”
Photographer and lecturer Natalie Robertson, Hamilton Fine Arts Curator John Hurrell and Lake Taupo Museum and Art
Gallery Director Karen Williams were the other judges for the competition.
Mighty River Power General Manager External Affairs Neil Williams says the competition began three years ago to
encourage budding photographers and has grown since then.
