Decorated Carnival Set To Wow Wellington L SET TO WOW WELLINGTON
The mission for the Cuba Street Carnival 2005 is to inspire and impress. A major element of this will be the decoration
of the entire site.
The new-look Carnival – on Saturday 26 February - is focusing on the wealth of creativity on which Cuba Street prides
itself.
A team of post-graduate students from the Victoria University School of Architecture and Design have been designing and
constructing a myriad of installation pieces that will ensure that the entire carnival site is transformed into to a
spectacle of colour.
Along with the carnival decoration retailers are encouraged to join in by “jazzing up” their premises as part of a
competition.
“There’ll be prizes from Logan Brown, The Duxton Hotel and Downstage Theatre for the best-decorated retailer on the
street. It gives the shops a great way to be involved with the event,” says Carnival Chair Chris Morley-Hall.
This year there’ll be three carnival stages featuring performers from far and wide. Bands include Batucada Sound Machine
(AK), Burundi drummers (Burundi), Scribes of Ra (Wgtn), Kora (Whakatane), DELETE (Italy/Norway) to name just a few.
And this year’s Carnival Parade - with a theme of “THE BODY ELECTRIC” - promises to be the best yet.
“We are very much focussing on the quality of the floats and have been working with groups since before Christmas to
achieve spectacular results.” says Larissa Marno, Parade Director.
Carnival 05 will be hitting Cuba Street on Saturday 26 February, with the Night Parade from 8.30pm.
The new-look carnival is all gearing up to put on the best party of the year ………RAIN OR SHINE
