Openair Cinema prepares for its second season
The Openair Cinema at the Viaduct Harbour is coming back for a second season. The temporary movie theatre will operate
on Te Wero Island from 13 January to 27 February 2005, which means it’s almost two weeks longer than last summer. There
are at least 34 different movies – a real festival of cinematic work around the world. The movie line-up is at

The programme is again very broad, consisting of new releases like:
‘The Incredibles’, ‘I Robot’, ‘National Treasure’ and ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’; classics such as ‘Casablanca’, ‘North
by Northwest’ and ‘The Maltese Falcon’; and ‘evergreens’. Again the emphasis was put on showing New Zealand made films.
So we’ve chosen ‘Her Majesty’, directed by Mark J. Gordon as the opening movie and on 5 February we are showing
‘Spooked’, a new thriller shot in Auckland, directed by Geoff Murphy with Cliff Curtis. Before each of the NZ-made
films, we are showing a short movie as a special treat, provided by the New Zealand Film Commission, to give a broader
audience the opportunity to enjoy them on the big screen. There are again some outdoor-classics to be seen, like ‘Step
into Liquid’ – one of the best surf-documentaries ever made; ‘Travelling Birds’ – a gem for all nature lovers; ‘Two
Brothers’ – a story about two tiger cubs; and ‘Touching the Void’- a brilliantly made documentary about two blokes in a
thrilling climbing accident.
Arthouse movies like the classic ‘Amélie’ and ‘Coffee and Cigarettes’, or music hits like ‘Buena Vista Social Club’,
‘The Commitments’, ‘Hair’ and ‘Standing in the Shadows of Motown’, again offer some quality choices for cinema and
music-lovers.
All seating is uncovered and allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. The flat seats are $12 and grandstand
seats are $16 each. The ticket office and gates open at seven each night (starting 13 January 2005). Tickets may be

The movie itself is just one part of the experience - the environment and scenery of the Viaduct Harbour creates the
atmosphere for a very special event. Moviegoers can enjoy the sunset, food, exclusive wine and beer from Waiheke Island,
soft drinks, coffee and ice cream. No BYO allowed at any times. As night falls the giant screen is inflated and an
unforgettable movie-going experience begins.
The Viaduct Harbour is the ideal location, close to Britomart and many nearby car parks. It is an event for Aucklanders
