Mighty River Power Photographic Competition Winners Announced
Imaginative interpretations of Creating Energy, including images of pylons, light streaks and even a pregnant woman, were a strong theme among the winners in the 2004 Mighty River Power Photographic Competition.
The winning entries were announced tonight at a special awards function at the Great Lake Centre in Taupo.
Mighty River Power General Manager External Affairs Neil Williams says the competition began two years ago to encourage budding photographers and has grown since then.
“We are delighted by the depth of talent in this country and look forward to providing more opportunities to foster that talent.”
More than 200 entries from throughout the country were received for the competition, which was open to secondary and tertiary students and non-professional photographers across four themes: landscape, documentary, portraiture and contemporary art.
Howick College’s Deone Kok was the overall winner of the Secondary section with an image of beds. The prize capped a successful night for Howick College, which won two of the four categories and had a runner-up in another in the Secondary section.
Cindy Hall’s portrait of her pregnant friend won the overall prize in the Tertiary section. A student of Waikato Institute of Technology, Cindy won two of the four themes in this section.
Wellington’s Des Brough won the Non-Professional section with his mesh of pylon images.
Professional photographer and one of the judges of the competition, Patrick Reynolds says the quality of entries and the standard of presentation were very encouraging.
“We were particularly impressed with the entries in the Secondary section and how students interpreted the brief to present their own ideas.”
Photographer and lecturer Natalie Robertson, Hamilton Fine Arts Curator John Hurrell and Lake Taupo Museum and Art Gallery Director Karen Williams were the other judges for the competition.
