Jazz hits the Rock
If jazz is the music that swings then Norfolk Island is the place to don your rhythm shoes in December.
The third annual Norfolk Island Jazz Festival – ‘Rhythm on the Rock’ – kicks off on December 4 with top Aussie multi-instrumentalist Don Burrows again heading a stellar line-up.
The week-long festival has attracted an eclectic bunch from Australia’s extensive jazz community. Performers include George Washingmachine of Acid Trad fame, Galapagos Duck, Stringmansassy, Frankie & Johnnie and the Jazz Factory.
Don Burrows, AO, MBE, is a household name in Australian jazz circles and has been blowing flute, clarinet and every type of saxophone in a professional music career that spans 60 years.
On Norfolk, referred to by locals as ‘The Rock’, the Don Burrows Quartet is joined by guest vocalist Catherine Hunter.
Notable concerts include Jazz in the Jail on the Wednesday (Dec. 8) and Thursday night’s performance by the Don Burrows Quartet accompanied by Catherine Hunter.
“The combination of pristine scenery, rich history and friendly charm makes Norfolk Island the perfect venue for a jazz festival,” says Norfolk Island Tourism’s general manager Bruce Walker.
“Like jazz music, life on Norfolk Island is smooth, relaxed and seductive, so a jazz festival here offers mainlanders the perfect time out,” Mr Walker says.

About Norfolk Island: Discovered by Captain Cook in 1774, Norfolk Island was first settled as a British penal colony in 1788 through to 1856. On June 8, 1856, the island was re-inhabited by a community from Pitcairn Island, descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions. Known today as Norfolk Islanders, they form a majority of the 1,800 resident population. Norfolk Island is renowned for its spectacular coastal scenery, colourful history, sporting and cultural activities, convict heritage and tax-free shopping.
