Local Performers To Shine At Mercury Energy Christmas At The Lake
More than 100 performers from the Waikato area will take to the stage at this year’s Mercury Energy Christmas at the Lake.
Included in the line up will be local teen singer-song writer Kimbra Johnson who recently came second at the Cokesmokefree Rockquest Finals. Kimbra will perform with well known local band Late Eighties Mercedes in a half hour set.
Gordon Woolley, event organiser, says that nurturing up and coming artists like Kimbra Johnson is an important part of Mercury Energy Christmas at the Lake. “The event provides the opportunity for younger artists to mix with people who have been in the business for years, picking up great advice and encouragement,” he says. “Being able to perform in front of nearly 30,000 people is not only a huge thrill for new performers but is also an important step in their careers.”
Other local acts include Hamilton Girl’s High School’s Downtown Girls. The barbershop quartet recently won the National Young Singers in Harmony competition held in Dunedin. Bass singer for the group, Sameeka Falanitama, says the girls are extremely excited to be performing at the event. “We’ve been practicing hard for the big day and it’s going to be so amazing performing to such a big crowd in our home town.”
Local entertainers will cover a wide range of musical genres from Jazz to Rock, from Rap to Country, ensuring there is something for everyone at this year’s Mercury Energy Christmas at the Lake.

Mr Woolley says that this year’s acts are not only diverse but are also of an outstanding quality. “Mercury Energy Christmas at the Lake gets bigger every year and with that growth we’re attracting some fantastic entertainers from around the Waikato and from outside the area.”
Up and coming Auckland singer Nicki Ahu has also been confirmed for the event. Ahu recently supported English R singer Jamelia on her New Zealand tour, after being chosen by the star’s UK producers.
Organisers earlier announced that top Kiwi band Zed will be headline act at this year’s event, playing a half hour set including songs from their new album as well as popular hits.
Mercury Energy Christmas at the Lake will be held at Hamilton Lake Domain, below the water tower between 3.30pm and 10pm, Sunday 5 December.
