This summer, Auckland Museum is the place to be with an action-packed school holiday programme of workshops, activities and trails!
Check out the special exhibition “OUCH!!! Confronting Nature’s Nasties” (admission charges apply) and explore all of the things in the natural world that can hurt us. Take part in our activities within the exhibition, meet the big scary spider and do the OUCH!!! discovery trail throughout the Museum.
Take part in our fun and crafty quilt workshops and activities to complement the three quilting exhibitions.

Ouch! Events
(Ouch! admission charges apply, Adults $10, children $5, families $22.50, discounted entry for members)
Giant Spider Appearances
Our giant spider will be roving the Ouch! Exhibition every day of the school holidays from 10am – 3pm.

Wednesday 19 & Friday 21 January, 11am & 2pm
A modern, kiwi adaptation of the nursery classic, by Oly Smart. This fast-paced and fun show with puppets is fab for children and adults alike.
Ouch! Origami
Friday 14 February, 2pm – 4pm & Saturday 22 January 10am – 12pm
Jonathan Baxter will be demonstrating nature’s nasties in amazing paper designs within the Ouch! exhibition.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays at 2pm, from 11 – 27 January in Ouch!
Snakes
Wednesday 19 & Wednesday 26 January
Death adders, gaboon vipers, sea-snakes, boas. Find out about snakes, both venomous and non-venomous, with Brian Gill, the Museum’s herpetologist. Bring in your questions for him to answer
Stinging Swimmers
Tuesday 11 & Thursday 13 January
Marine specialist Leslie Newman will introduce to all those nasty biters and stingers!
Painful Plants
Tuesday 18 & Thursday 20 January
Ewen Cameron, Botanist extraordinaire, will guide you through plants that you’d rather not get up close and personal with.
Spiders & Scorpions
Tuesday 25 & Thursday 27 January
Find out about our eight-legged friends with John Early, our entomologist. Bring in your spiders for him to identify (preferably in jars!).
Ouch! Trail
Every day of the holidays
Inside and outside the exhibition. Completed trails go into the draw to win copies of Simon Pollard’s book, ‘I am an insect’, kindly provided by Reed Publishing.
Ouch! Weekly Competition
Identify the pictured objects in Ouch! Correct entries go into the weekly draw to win membership to the Dinomites, the Museum’s kids’ club. If you like the Ouch! exhibition you’ll love the Dinomites!
Ouch! Workshops
Bookings essential. Please phone 09 306 7040. Places are confirmed with payment. Bookings taken from WEDNESDAY 1 DECEMBER.
Junior Workshops (ages 4 to 6 years) $6 or $5 for Dinomites.

Puffer Fish
Monday 10 January
Make your own inflatable puffer fish, which expands before your eyes.
Stingray
Wednesday 19 January
Create a stunning stingray which floats!
Senior Workshops (ages 7 to 12 years unless otherwise stated) $12.50 or $10 for Dinomites. All senior workshops include admission to Ouch! for the participant and one caregiver.
Workshop times: 10am – 11.30am or 1.30pm – 3pm
Insect Masks
Wednesday 12 January
Create a funky insect mask. Make it as cute or scary as you like!
Squiggly Centipedes
Wednesday 19 January
Make your own wiggly moveable centipede. Creepy!
Glenys’ Menaces – stingers, biters and crunchers!
Tuesday 25 January
Check out how marine creatures can hurt humans in Ouch! Then create your own marine creature from our collection of marine flotsam and think up a really imaginative way for that creature to protect itself.
Make a mini cacti garden – a special 10-13 year olds’ workshop
Thursday 27 January
Learn all about these spiny plants and grow your own mini cacti garden.
Nature’s Nasties workshop – a special 10 – 13 yeas olds’ workshop
Friday 21 January
Get hands-on with a number of Ouch! creatures and plants that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

Quilting with Origami
Saturday 15 January, 11am
Choose your own paper and exclusive weaving designs with Origami expert Jonathan Baxter. In the Education Room. Suitable for 7 – 12 year olds.
Storytelling
Monday 17 & Monday 24 January, 11am & 2pm
Hear a magical story about quilts with storyteller, Jo Lees. Treasures & Tales, Children’s Discovery Centre.

Come on a tour throughout the Museum on a search for quilts! Sheet available from the Information Desk.
Discovery Centre 10 Minute Activities

Daily in the Discovery Centres. No need to book, just pop on in. $2 (or $1 for Dinomites).
