We have a fine bunch of New Zealand music this week, including new ones from P-Money, The Chills, Evermore, Kora, Fly My
Pretties, plus the remastered reissue of Split Enz's timeless classic 'True Colours'. De La Soul return with their
latest work, as does Fatboy Slim. Lamb add their addition to the very popular 'Back To Mine' series, William Shatner
(yep, Star Trek) returns to pop music after 30-odd years with the willfully eccentric 'Has Been', and new act Kasabian
launch their throbbing dance-rock debut at the unsuspecting pop world. Lastly we would like to recognise the talent of
the late John Peel - and his Fabriclive set is a fitting tribute to the great man. He will be missed.

Attention all you legions of Chills fans out there, Martin Phillipps and his bunch of merry music makers are back in the
recording arena and sounding fantastic. No longer part of the Flying Nun roster, the 'Stand By' EP is the first new
material available in over five years and the first on his own record label. The current band has remained stable for
the last five years, in the process gaining a reputation as one of the best ever "live" Chills line-ups, while the songs
themselves have been part of the Chills (or Phillipps' solo) sets in the last few years. The sound is immediate, almost
raw (think 'Brave Words), and serves as an effective posterity piece for Phillipps and the Chills as they once again
launch themselves into the world of "pop" music (according to Phillipps a new full-length album is coming!)

The latest outfit to come out of New Zealand's buoyant roots-rock (TrinityRoots, Black Seeds, Cornerstone Roots, Fat
Freddy's, etc) scene is this Whakatane and Wellington five-piece known as Kora. Made up of the four Kora brothers
(Laughton - vocals/guitar/keyboards, Francis - bass/vocals, Stuart - guitar/vocals, Brad - drums) and Dan McGruer
(keyboards/bass), this outfit have made a name for themselves via a number of superb live performances (delicious
addictive vocal harmonies sailing on an irresistibly tight powerhouse rhythm section) and a stunning track called
"Politician" (included on this EP). Produced by the band, engineered by Lee Prebble (Black Seeds, The Phoenix
Foundation, TrinityRoots), and mastered by Mu (Fat Freddy's Drop), this is a deep and soulful work, combining elements
of rock, dub and reggae to great effect. A superb debut.

Since winning the 2000 Smokefree Rock Quest, this trio of brothers from Fielding (New Zealand) have quickly risen to the
heady heights of antipodean music stardom (recently supporting the likes of Keane and Snow Patrol in Sydney), and with
this, their full-length debut, it is easy to see why. Recorded in Seattle, 'Dreams' is an epic slice of "emo" commercial
rock, based around a set of meticulously structured and highly melodic songs, which at their best recall the anthemic
aesthetic of the likes of U2. 'Dreams' is an album that works well as a "whole" listening piece, so if commercial
pop/rock is your thing, Evermore have delivered a massive debut album that is bound to satisfy, and with a band so
young, one would have to assume that they are just going to get better with time.

For those of you not yet aware, local boy Barnaby Weir (Black Seeds, Flash Harry) has a certain knack for the "pop" song
that goes way beyond the pleasant reggae grooves of the Black Seeds. Performed, filmed and recorded at Bats Theatre in
Wellington over four nights, this live set is as much a testament to the bunch of Wellington's finest young "pop"
musicians involved as it is to the vision of Weir. As such, the line-up includes Sam Scott (The Phoenix Foundation),
Toby Laing (Fat Freddy's Drop), Mike Fabulous (Black Seeds), Daniel Weetman (Black Seeds), Nato (Paselode), Brendan
Moran (ex-Hasselhoff Experiment) and Age Pryor, with the very able soundman/producer Lee Prebble holding it all
together. The songs themselves are a mixture of old and new, all penned by Weir except for Age Pryor's touching "Singing
In My Soul" and Sam Scott's stunning "Quiet Girl". Undoubtedly a series of magical evenings, the show reproduces well as
a listening alone experience, and congratulations must go to the star of the show - Mr Weir - for tackling such a
project with genuine style.

Well it has taken a while, but this masterpiece from this bunch of kiwi music icons finally gets the reissue/remaster
treatment it richly deserves. Originally released 25 years ago, 'True Colours' saw Split Enz at what was arguably both
their creative and commercial peak - songwriting duties were split evenly between brothers Tim and Neil Finn, both
simultaneously hitting their writing "stride" and producing a slew of hit singles including "I Got You", "I Hope I
Never", "Nobody Takes Me Seriously" and "Poor Boy". This new version comes with a brand new colour combination as
selected by Noel Crombie (some of you may remember the original LPs coming out in different colour combinations), a new
12 page full colour booklet including lyrics and photos, and was remastered by Eddie Rayner and Steve Smart in Sydney.
Oh yes, it sounds simply fantastic too.

The initial spotlight that shone on Auckland DJ & producer P-Money has faded a little recently, with his friend and successful collaborator Scribe dominating press and
sales in New Zealand's hip-hop scene. This is no bad thing though; instead it has allowed this incredibly talented young
man to come up with an excellent sophomore long player, which stands as an impressive follow up to his already classic
'Big Things' album. P-Money's standing in both the local and international hip-hop community has gone from strength to
strength since his debut, and an international cast of emcee talent combined with New Zealand's finest gives the album a
truly global feel. 'Magic City' makes an impact - its a record that could have failed miserably but seems more likely
to become another classic for its maker and another example of the incredible rise of New Zealand hip-hop over the last
two years.

'The Grind Date' proves that even after fifteen years in the rap game, De La Soul are still one of the most
distinctively brilliant crews in hip-hop, and shows the pretenders out there how to achieve an album that holds your
attention from start to finish. The first of two albums planned for 2004, 'The Grind Date' sees Dave, Mase & Pos continuing to astound critics and fans alike, containing an energy rappers half their age would die for. Guests
include R crooner Carl Thomas, spiritually enlightened rapper Common, and the self-confessed weirdest man in hip-hop, MF Doom,
while guest production also comes from the likes of Madlib and Jaydee (of Slum Village and The Pharcyde fame). This
collaborative approach helps keep the album fresh, and gives the whole package a musicality that makes it completely
listenable throughout. Once again they have produced a sure fire contender for hip-hop album of the year.

Although more famous in his Star Trek role as Captain Kirk, 36 years ago William Shatner was responsible for an album
widely regarded as a bonafide "cult" classic known as 'Transformed Man'. 2004 sees Shatner resurrecting his music career
once again, this time collaborating with the very talented Ben Folds and a slew of studio guests (and fans) including
Joe Jackson, Lemon Jelly, Henry Rollins, Nick Hornby, Adrian Belew, Aimee Mann, Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing) and
Jon Auer (The Posies). Including a stunning version of Pulp's "Common People" (one of the best cover versions you will
hear all year), Shatner's deadpan narrative delivery perfectly suits his wry observations and humorous rants, while
Folds' sympathetic backing arrangements provides the perfect platform throughout this curious album. 'Has Been' is an
engaging and intriguing listen which will appeal to indie fans and eccentric pop fans alike (and of course you legions
of Trekkies).

Much has been made of the fact that Cook is using real instruments on his latest effort 'Palookaville' (his first since
2000's 'Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars'), but to be honest it would appear to be "business as usual", albeit
quality "business as usual" from the man (who like Moby) took dance music to the masses. Sure there are a number of
guest vocalists and collaborators, a handful of which bring some truly inspiring moments to this album - the vocally
dextrous "Wonderful Night" (featuring Blackalicious rapper Lateef), the punky-pop "Long Way From Home" (featuring
Brighton band Jonny Quality), the gorgeous "Put It Back Together" (featuring Blur's Damon Albarn), the deliciously
punchy "Push And Shove" (featuring Justin Robertson), and the soulful bop of "The Journey" (again featuring Lateef) -
but it is Cook's ability to create genuinely uplifting euphoric "pop" music that truly shines here.

This four-piece out of Leicester are apparently one of Liam Gallagher's favourite bands, and for once he may be right!
With a rock sound that incorporates throbbing electronica, Kasabian make swaggering anthemic pop music that recalls the
better parts of Primal Scream and the Happy Mondays without sounding retro or dated. All of this is backed up by some
pretty decent songs, catchy sloganeering rhetoric, and plenty of suitably lean classic rock'n'roll-meets-electro, while
in between the throbbing anthems ("Club Foot", "Processed Beats" "LSF"), Kasabian also bring a little welcome
atmospheric subtlety ("Butcher Blues", "Running Battle", "Test Transmission") to proceedings. For those of you searching
for a belligerent replacement for your Underworld and Leftfield albums, this mighty debut could be just the ticket.

The latest set in the excellent 'Back To Mine' home listening series comes from Lamb, or more specifically their music
maker extraordinaire Andy Barlow. As you'd expect from the man behind the rather brilliant "Gorecki" it is a deeply
percussive, spiritual and mesmerising affair - hence this set's "Voodoo Sessions" title. Impeccably selected, this
collection features the likes of Dr John, Nina Simone as remixed by Masters At Work, French outfit Melaaz, Nitin
Sawhney, Hipoptimist (a pre-Lamb Barlow work), Omar Faruk Tekbilek as remixed by Hefner, bluesman Chris Thomas King, The
Bug Vs Rootsman, and Nabintou Diakite (taken from the Damon Albarn 'Mali Music' project). Like the Death In Vegas set
released earlier this year, this collection from Barlow way exceeds the sum of its parts, taking the willing listener on
a thought provoking and unique aural journey, and like the above mentioned Death In Vegas set, this is easily one of the
best in the series so far.

This Fabric set comes from UK's king of the airwaves and reknown taste maker John Peel - and it's an absolute beaut. Not
known as a club DJ, this rare appearance at Fabric brought the house down, and based on this recording it is easy to see
why. Pulling tracks from anywhere and everywhere, Peel throws together everything from the Bad Liver's bluegrass
interpretation of Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life" to The Fall and Joy Division, to some delicious reggae, thumping techno,
driving drum & bass action, a little blues courtesy of Jimmy Reed, funk/soul workouts, our very own hard rockin' Datsuns, and finally
ending with the gloriously timeless Undertone's "Teenage Kicks". Compiled with impeccable taste, this vital and
expansive set is a stunner, and a fitting tribute to the great man. He will be missed.

This four-piece out of Leicester are apparently one of Liam Gallagher's favourite bands, and for once he may be right!
With a rock sound that incorporates throbbing electronica, Kasabian make swaggering anthemic pop music that recalls the
better parts of Primal Scream and the Happy Mondays without sounding retro or dated. All of this is backed up by some
pretty decent songs, catchy sloganeering rhetoric, and plenty of suitably lean classic rock'n'roll-meets-electro, while
in between the throbbing anthems ("Club Foot", "Processed Beats" "LSF"), Kasabian also bring a little welcome
atmospheric subtlety ("Butcher Blues", "Running Battle", "Test Transmission") to proceedings. For those of you searching
for a belligerent replacement for your Underworld and Leftfield albums, this mighty debut could be just the ticket.

The latest set in the excellent 'Back To Mine' home listening series comes from Lamb, or more specifically their music
maker extraordinaire Andy Barlow. As you'd expect from the man behind the rather brilliant "Gorecki" it is a deeply
percussive, spiritual and mesmerising affair - hence this set's "Voodoo Sessions" title. Impeccably selected, this
collection features the likes of Dr John, Nina Simone as remixed by Masters At Work, French outfit Melaaz, Nitin
Sawhney, Hipoptimist (a pre-Lamb Barlow work), Omar Faruk Tekbilek as remixed by Hefner, bluesman Chris Thomas King, The
Bug Vs Rootsman, and Nabintou Diakite (taken from the Damon Albarn 'Mali Music' project). Like the Death In Vegas set
released earlier this year, this collection from Barlow way exceeds the sum of its parts, taking the willing listener on
a thought provoking and unique aural journey, and like the above mentioned Death In Vegas set, this is easily one of the
best in the series so far.
