Korean Film Festival – Media Conference: 22.10.04
Friday promises to be the start of Korean cinema’s beautiful relationship with New Zealand film lovers.
Local cinema buffs are ready for the onslaught of 12 top Korean films handpicked by the Korean Cinerama Trust. The Trust was called to action after Prime Minister Helen Clark’s discussion with the Korean President last year, about drafting a film co-production agreement between the two countries.
After hundreds of hours of hard work the Trust is ready to stimulate the senses, with the launch of the first film on Friday.
This historical inauguration of a Korean Film Festival in New Zealand will have all the trappings of a major launch starting with a press conference at 4pm at the Sky City Hotels Welcome Room (next to the hotel reception), followed by a cocktail reception (invites only) followed by cultural performances.
Korea’s most successful and highest grossing film in American history, Taegukgi, the Brotherhood of War promises to leave movie lovers on the night just as mesmerised as other fans all over the world.
The importance of the week long festival starting Friday is highlighted with the presence of the Vice President of the Korean Film Council who herself is one of the biggest Korean film stars.
The films promise to affect a whole range of emotions with war to hard boiled thrillers, to a tale about the ancient Chosun Dynasty’s greatest Casanova. There’s also the contemporary issue of the tense relationship between North and South Korea and “My Wife is a Gangster”, a comedy about a woman boss of a gang – which Hollywood has just purchased to remake.
The growing popularity of Korean films is ensured in New Zealand with the Korean Cinerama Trusts deciding to hold a Korean Film Festival every two years with Wellington and Christchurch also targeted in 2006.
