Prunella Scales To Tour New Zealand In November With Her Masterwork Performance As Queen Victoria
Internationally known and beloved for her performance as the reigning monarch of Fawlty Towers, British actress Prunella Scales is to tour New Zealand in her highly acclaimed performance as Britain’s longest reigning monarch, Queen Victoria.
An Evening With Queen Victoria explores the fascinating life of one of history’s most extraordinary figures, and Prunella Scales brings the great Queen uncannily to life from girlhood to old age. The production also features music heard and enjoyed by Victoria herself, sung by esteemed tenor Ian Partridge accompanied by Richard Burnett on piano.
This portrait of Queen Victoria is drawn from her own words including her extensive personal diaries and letters. It ranges from the young Princess as an impetuous girl, to the impressive matriarch of her final years. We share the fascinating experiences of her immense reign, and see the Queen at her Coronation, as wife and mother, matron, widow and Empress. We also follow her intriguing relationships with the men in her life, including King Leopold, Lord Melbourne, Prince Albert, John Brown, and Prime Ministers Disraeli and Gladstone. Above all, we see Victoria through her own eyes, revealing a contradictory and sometimes surprising person - at once vivid and emotional, yet nervous and lacking in confidence; puritanical yet pleasure-loving. Most endearing is her honesty, and her unexpected humour, all of which Prunella Scales brings irresistibly to life.
Devised and directed by Katrina Hendrey, with music compiled by Richard Burnett, An Evening With Queen Victoria has been performed throughout the world. From London to Taipei, from Washington to Oslo, audiences and critics have delighted in Prunella Scales’ uncannily formidable performance.
An extraordinary time, an extraordinary woman, an extraordinary performance can all be re-discovered in the company of Prunella Scales in An Evening With Queen Victoria.
