Aotearoa Rap pioneers Upper Hutt Posse take to the stage @ Bar Bodega October 29 celebrating all that is political,
conscious, and indigenous, Te Kupu and MC Wiya will be performing with a 3-piece backing band with soulful support from
Nat Rose, DJ Resist and assorted comrades.
The night will be a unique intermingling of music, images, thoughts and comprehensions where hip hop, poetry and
activism exist as one, highlighting the new release of the music video for E TU Remix and recent albums Te Reo Maori
Remixes and Dedicated, as well as other footage from the recent Hikoi. All of this being down under a barrage of beats,
breaks, and lyrics as a manifesto of indigenous struggle using hip hop as a signifier and base for the politics of
culture expressed.
The gig celebrates indigenous resistance to colonisation, coinciding with the anniversary week of the signing of the
Declaration of Independence in 1835 at Waitangi. The Declaration gave Maori sovereignty over their land and declared
Aotearoa an independent country. In the context of that struggle the night is an expression of Tino Rangatiratanga and
all those who oppose the Seabed and Foreshore legislation, US Imperialism, the National Front, Religious Thuggery,
Racism and the oppressive actions of those in the Beehive.
As Te Kupu puts it "As the warmongering against indigenous peoples continues, events like this are happening for us to
celebrate our existence, for us to strengthen the resolve to end racism and to end oppression, to end this bullshit
capitalist system which only benefits greed and money hunger".
Activist stalls disseminating consciousness raising materials will be in effect supporting activism and providing the
kind of knowledge so-called mainstream media have restricted access too.
The video: Combining Hikoi footage on a split screen next to black 'n' white still photographs (from protests dating
back to the 1970's), E Tu Remix is the 15th UHP music video, their 5th in te reo Maori. This gig is essentially the
closing of another chapter for UHP as they’re working on a new Album to be released in koanga 2005.
