NZer Heads World’s Largest Bible Organisation
Dr George Barton QC, of Wellington, was elected President of the United Bible Societies (UBS) at its World Assembly in Newport, Wales, last month.
There are 138 national, autonomous Bible Societies which comprise the UBS and this is the first time a New Zealander has been elected to head the international organisation.
Dr Barton will serve as President for six years.
He has been a member of the Board of Management of the Bible Society in New Zealand since 1966 and was the Society’s President from 1996-1998.
Dr Barton gained his doctorate from Cambridge University and has been admitted to the Bar not only in New Zealand but also in Sarawak, Sabah, Cook Islands, Niue and Samoa. His work for the people of Samoa was recognised in 1995 when he was given the honour of being appointed a Matai (Chief).
Dr Barton is a member of the St Ninians Uniting Church in Wellington.
