Mayor keen to bid for triathlon
September 6, 2004
North Shore City is keen for the chance to host the first World Cup triathlon event in New Zealand in November next year.
Mayor George Wood believes the North Shore would be the perfect place for international competitors to swim, run and ride.
"We would be delighted to have the World Cup triathlon circuit event here and could provide a professional and picturesque experience for race goers."
"Our city very successfully hosted the Trans Tasman Masters Games earlier this year."
Triathlon New Zealand recently had the triathlon event officially sanctioned by the international body, the ITU.
The possibility of including New Zealand on the World Cup Circuit surfaced again after Hamish Carter and Bevan Docherty won gold and silver at the Athens Olympics.
World Cup bid project manager, Richard Lindroos, says he is keen to talk further with North Shore City.
"I believe it would be an excellent host location and I welcome their proposal," he says.
George Wood says the council would be prepared to help promote the event and will now begin looking at putting its own bid together.
"We are having a closer look at the criteria for the race, in terms of what would be required to stage it," he says.
"It would be a great event and a wonderful attraction for people across the region and indeed throughout New Zealand. It would also have a positive economic spin off for the North Shore. We have got to put our hand up now to have a chance of hosting it."
