The 2004 Wellington Lesbian Ball
If you’re out and about in Wellington in September, don’t be surprised if you’re confronted by Joan of Arc, Princess Leia, or maybe even Xena, Warrior Princess.
The 2004 Wellington Lesbian Ball hits the Capital on September 25, and with the costume theme of “In one era and out the other,” there’s sure to be a well-represented slice of powerful women from throughout the ages.
“It’s a chance for women to dress up to represent their favourite era – or as a famous character from past, present, or future,” said committee spokesperson Daphne Lawless. “We wanted a theme that would be a bit of fun and would give everyone the chance to wear something that suits them.”
The festivities will take place at the James Cook Hotel on The Terrace, from 8pm to 1am. In keeping with the theme, a live DJ will be spinning the hits from bygone eras all the way up to the 21st century.
The ballgoers will also be entertained by bellydancing and performances from the Drag Kings, and treated to a sumptuous finger-food spread. Spot prizes will be awarded for the best costumes, as an extra incentive to dress up.
All women are welcome at the ball, but numbers are limited and there are no door sales, so they'll need to book tickets quickly! Tickets are just $35 for the waged, and $25 for the unwaged - according Daphne, "a deliberate decision to keep things as affordable as possible for everyone". They can be purchased at D.Vice, Pound/Sovereign, and Unity Books, or from http://wellington.lesbian.net.nz/ball or PO Box 10104 Wellington.
"We've already had a number of tickets bought by women who're coming down all the way from Auckland especially," Daphne concluded. "It will be a damn good party!"
