First Time For Band In South Island
The National Secondary Schools Brass Band visits the South Island this month for the first time since forming in 2001.
The band of 49 students are chosen at audition from throughout New Zealand’s Secondary Schools by Musical Director Nigel Weeks and will convene in Christchurch to work with local tutors and musicians from the NZ Army Band. Mr Weeks is the conductor of the New Zealand Champion Band Dalewool Auckland Brass who took the A grade NZ Championship last month in Christchurch.
Repertoire will include selections and entertainment pieces by Wagner, Sousa, Don Lusher and Andrew Lloyd Webber as well as featured soloists from within the Band.
“We try and introduce new repertoire and provide a rounded experience for our students so they can contribute to their schools and local bands when they return home” says Musical Director Nigel Weeks.
Last year the band performed at Youth Arts 2003 in Wellington which had many other national groups performing over a week of activities.
