Shirin Neshat One of America’s most celebrated and controversial artists, film-maker Shirin Neshat reflects on her feelings of displacement and exile on returning to her native Iran after the Islamic Revolution. 28 August - 7 November 2004 Admission charge
Golden – Celebrating 50 Years of the Friends of the Gallery Key works gifted by the Friends since 1954, including works by Colin McCahon, Frances Hodgkins, Rita Angus and Pat Hanly. The centrepiece is the Friends’ 50th anniversary gift, Rita Angus’ AD 1968. Until 24 October Free Entry
Shane Cotton Survey 1993-2003 Paintings by this celebrated New Zealand artist, exploring issues of biculturalism. The exhibitions follows Cotton’s development from his early works drawing on late 19th century Māori Folk Art through to his massive suite of new paintings - surprising and compelling as anything Cotton has done before. Poetic Imaginings: Piranesi’s Rome Drawing on the Gallery’s considerable holdings of Piranesi etchings, this exhibition allows the spectator to explore the artist’s world of grand edifices, tumbling ruins and architectural inventions. Until 31 October 2004 Free entry
A Tale to Tell: Narrative Paintings from the Collection Long after Victorian art went out of fashion in England it remained popular in the colonies. This exhibition displays the Gallery’s rich holdings of Victorian art. Free entry Until 14 November
Self and Other: The Expressionist Spirit in New Zealand Art A rich evocation of local Expressionism in the 1970s and 1980s, looking at the work of some of the Expressionist icons in New Zealand painting, sculpture and drawing. Until 17 October Free entry
