Kia Ora! Welcome to Te Papa, New Zealand's bold and innovative national museum. A visit to Te Papa is the perfect thing for a winter's day. If everyone's getting cabin fever at home, come along to Te Papa for a dose of Antarctic fever instead! The dramatic Antarctic Heroes exhibition continues along with free documentary screenings about the icy continent, lectures by people who have worked in or been inspired by the Antarctic, and the chance to meet real Siberian Huskies. There's also heaps of freezing fun to be had for kids these school holidays. The Discovery Centre Inspiration Station becomes 'Inspiration Base' - the headquarters for lots of polar activities related to the Antarctic Heroes exhibition. Listen to icy snow stories with Dick Weir and take part in a variety of creative Antarctic activities including making a model sled, constructing a Race to the Pole game, and creating a penguin sock puppet. And kids - be sure to enter The Dominion Post's competition to win a trip to the International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch for you and your family! It's Wellington Film Festival time! Got your programme? Te Papa's Soundings Theatre is the venue for a raft of great films from mid month. There are plenty of other exciting things going at Te Papa this month, too. Come and watch one of Indonesia's most renowned traditional puppeteers, or celebrate the Whitireia Writing Programme's tenth birthday with its graduates. 1.30pm-2.30pm: Judy Darragh Floortalk Hear artist Judy Darragh speak about her work. Meet by the floortalk poster at the entrance to The Boulevard, Level 5. Free entry.

Sunday 4

1pm-2pm: Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Husky dogs! See real working dogs harnessed to a wooden sled. Dog handlers Michael Plant and Peter McLaughlan will be on hand with Trinity, Tonka, Skylah, Khazahn and Tuscon to talk about their dogs, demonstrate equipment and answer questions about the dogs and their lives in the snow. 12 noon-12.30pm: Pack-a-pack interactive survival activity. Inspiration Station, Level 4. Free entry. 1pm-2pm: 'Emperors Of Antarctica' documentary screening. (All ages.) A TVNZ camera crew battle against the Antarctic winter to gain spectacular footage and tell the enthralling story of this southernmost and smallest colony of Emperor penguins. Footage courtesy of Natural History New Zealand Ltd. Soundings Theatre, Level 2. Free entry. 2pm-3pm: Make an Antarctic animal mask. Inspiration Station, Level 4. Cost $2. Dr. Sylvia Earle is a top American oceanographer who has lead deep-sea exploration and made the world's deepest solo dive strapped to the front of a small submersible. She has followed the great sperm whales from Hawaii to New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Bermuda and Alaska. Presented by Department of Conservation in association with the US Embassy. Free entry. 12 noon-1pm: Icebird - Adelie Penguins in Antarctica' documentary screening. (All ages.) They will talk about working in the Antarctic environment, on an active volcano, locating the geographic South Pole, the perils of brushing your teeth with a frozen toothbrush, and more! Marc Lottering, one of South Africa's leading comedians has been eliciting roars of laughter with his latest show "Say Cheese". The show earned Lottering the prestigious South African Fleur Du Cap Theatre Award for Best Performance in Comedy in 2004. Lottering visits New Zealand as South Africans around the world mark the 10th anniversary of democracy in South Africa. "Say Cheese" is not suitable for children. Soundings Theatre, Level 2. 1pm-2pm: Korean shaman ritual kut. The Mansudaet'ak Preservation Group from the Republic of Korea will present a theatrical kut. This religious preforming art tradition includes music, dance, trance, comical interludes and acrobatics, all designed to bring peace to unhappy spirits. The Marae, Level 4. Free entry.

12 noon-2pm: Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry). Joko Susilo, an 8th-generation dhalang (traditional Indonesian puppeteer) presents a highly sophisticated show aimed at both an adult and children audience. Accompanied by the Victoria University Gamelan Padhang Moncar. The Marae, Level 4. Free entry.

SHORT-TERM EXHIBITIONS:

Antarctic Heroes: The race to the South Pole

The South Pole was a magnet for a generation of Antarctic explorers in the early twentieth century. This exhibition tells the compelling stories of Scott, Amundsen, and Shackleton, of the epic and tragic race to reach the Pole, and the ill-fated Endurance expedition. Discover what led these men to face the dangers of a savage environment, what drove their heroic feats, and what inspired their extraordinary endurance in the face of both triumph and disaster. Until 26 October 2004. Adult $6.50, child (4-14 years) $4.00. Up to two children gain free admission if accompanied by an adult. Antarctic Heroes is based on the exhibition South: the race to the Pole at the National Maritime Museum, London.

Judy Darragh: So... You Made It?

Developed by Te Papa in collaboration with Judy Darragh, this exhibition showcases over sixty works from the last eighteen years. It reviews the history of Darragh's practice, while the inclusion of a brand-new body of work foregrounds her status as an artist of today. Until 29 August 2004. Free entry.

John Kinder's New Zealand

A major art exhibition of watercolours and photographs by the renowned nineteenth-century artist John Kinder. Until 29 August 2004. Free entry.

Te Awa Tupua: The Whanganui Iwi Exhibition

In partnership with Te Papa, Whanganui iwi present stories and taonga from their unique Whanganui river culture, from Te Kähui Maunga (the mountain clan) to Tangaroa (the sea). The exhibition's central theme is contained in the whakatauakï (proverb), 'E rere kau mai te awa nui mai Te Kähui Maunga ki Tangaroa, ko au te awa ko te awa ko au.' (The great river flows from the mountain clan to Tangaroa, I am the river; the river is me). Until May 2006. Free entry.

Kiri's Dresses: A glimpse into a Diva's wardrobe

Dresses from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's wardrobe and her memories of them give an intimate glimpse into the life of a world-famous lyric soprano. Until 19 September 2004. Free entry.
