We made it through NZ Music Month in one piece – but the pace never lets up! In IMNZ news, Bernie Griffen, Director of
Flaming Pearl Records and Global Routes Music, and chair of IMNZ, has been invited onto the Board of RIANZ. Griffen is
also a board member of the NZ Music Industry Commission.
Adeaze's debut album ‘Always & For Real’ went gold the day it was released, platinum later that week, debuted on the charts at #2 followed by Dawn
Raid achieving their first #1 album. The Str8 From South Auckland Tour, featuring Mareko, Adeaze, Deceptikonz, DJCXL,
Brotha D & many more, heads to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane June 24.
After a successful Missy Elliot support, performance on Top of the Pops and high rotate on both Juice and C4, the Fast
Crew entered the singles chart at #26, and ‘D’Luscious’ heading off at #20 on the Compilations chart. Te Vaka have just
released their new album ‘Tutuki’, and they were the subject of an award-winning entry at the NZ Radio Awards, in the
‘Best Recorded Live Music Event’ category.
Crumb’s debut album ‘So Dirty, Every Day’, will be released in September 2004. Liv Tyler is a fan and building on their
international appeal, Crumb are being courted by a US label. New Antenna act JCK have released their debut single Radio
Song. They have previously been finalists three times in the Coke Rhythm Nation contest.
The Warratahs (Pagan) had a huge summer, winding up with 2 packed out nights in Sky City and a week in Norfolk Island;
they’ll soon be working on a new album. Paul Ubana Jones is back from a European tour and also has a new album in the
pipeline, and Trip have nearly completed a follow up to the ‘Pretty Cool’ album. Dan Sperber from the Relaxomatic
Project is currently residing in Europe, and the Indicator Dogs are writing new songs.
In new release news, the ‘Monkey Magic’ compilation, fresh off the tour bus, is in stores this month. Look out also for
the new eye-popping video for Onelung's Far As I made by animation whiz Kim Newall. Mai Music have released Whirimako
Black’s new album ‘Tangihaku’. And Whirimako has been invited to join Babaa Maal and Maxi Jazz as featured vocalists
with 1 Giant Leap at a massive concert event in Athens on June 21. The event kicks off the celebrations running up to
the Olympic Games in August.
‘Ultrasound 2017’ is out now on Sugarlicks Records, and the crew are heading to Australia for a series of shows, dates
tbc. On June 1, Misfits of Science (HooF) released their debut single Fools Love; you may have caught the excellent
video already. Last Thursday Lucid 3 released their new album ‘All Things Leading To This’. Listen up for new Arch Hill
songs on your airwaves: Fang Yellow, Red Drum I Want Fire and Ghostplane (various tracks), and a new Pine track very
soon.
Dub Asylum have released an ep featuring mixes of tracks from the album ‘She Dubs Me, She Dubs Me Not’ by a bunch of hot
producers. The EP launch was celebrated with a very special event: Daniel Tippett and DLT did a big graffiti art mural
over the EP covers, so each individual cover is a limited edition artwork…. They’ve almost all been sold so be quick if
you want one!
Powertool Records’ ‘Bulletholes – Reload’ was officially released on June the 5th with a party at the Ambassador Theatre
featuring performances by an impressive lineup of artists, including the Demi Whores, Dead Souls, Voom and Chris Knox –
all covering each others’ songs! Powertool have also released records from Ed Gains, Robert Scott (of the Bats) and the
Shrugs.
Maorimusic.com are distributing the Southgate Records’ label debut compilation ‘Our Story’, featuring hot new hiphop and
rnb artists. Moana and the Tribe (Tangata) are touring Europe for 6 weeks at the end of June; with possibly some shows
in the US too. Piripi Christie has been invited to Tahiti for an international Pacific Rim songwriting competition along
with songwriters from Hawaii, Australia, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Piripi's debut album will be released in July.
Gahu’s album ‘Hot Planet’, heralds a new style, Afro-Kiwi, dug even by Prime Minister Helen Clark, who said upon seeing
them, “...So congratulations Gahu and we’re looking forward to the launch of your CD. I think a lot of people are going
to be rocking to that.” (March 7 2004).
In tour news, the Reliable crew are on the road with their ‘Sun Valley Sounds 2’ release shows, traversing Dunedin,
Piha, Nelson, Ohakune, Queenstown, New Plymouth and Auckland. Paselode are on a nationwide tour, visiting the South
Island this month and finishing in Auckland on June 25 and Mt Maunganui June 26. Stylus continue their national tour,
playing Mt Maunganui, New Plymouth and Palmerston North. The Phoenix Foundation have recently played a series of shows
in Australia.
Hamilton's This Night Creeps (1157 records) have been touring the North Island along with Australian band Love Like
Electrocution. Available only on tour is a limited edition split CDEP featuring the artwork of Reuben Nielsen of the
Mint Chicks. After desecrating Melbourne in December 2003, Missing Teeth return for three shows with Good Riddance (USA)
plus their own headlining shows in Melbourne. From there it’s back to New Zealand to join up with Good Riddance to
complete the New Zealand leg of the tour. The Bleeders have been working on new material and completing the video for
All That Glitters.
