On Thursday 8 July he takes on the dual role of soloist and conductor in the third Celebrity Concert of the Auckland
Philharmonia’s Vero Premier Series.
Born in Russia, Yuri Bashmet studied at the Moscow Conservatoire where he subsequently became the youngest person ever
to be appointed to a professorship. In great demand around the world as a soloist and chamber musician, Yuri Bashmet is
the founding director of the Moscow Soloists – the cream of the new generation of string players – with which he also
performs regularly. He has inspired many composers to write for him including Alfred Schnittke, Giya Kancheli, John
Tavener, Sofia Gubaidulina and Mark-Anthony Turnage, and has been the first violist to ever give a solo recital in a
number of major concert halls including La Scala in Milan and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
In his début concert with the Auckland Philharmonia, Yuri Bashmet, who is renowned for his intensity and energy on
stage, will conduct the orchestra in works by Schubert and Tchaikovsky; and will demonstrate his prowess on the viola as
the soloist/conductor in works by Telemann, Weber and Hindemith.
