Three exhibitions now on display at Auckland Museum show the rich diversity of New Zealand's crafts people.
Peter Stichbury - a Survey of a Pioneer New Zealand Studio Potter ON DISPLAY UNTIL 8 AUGUST
The first major exhibition in a public gallery of one of New Zealand's finest potters. The exhibition has been timed to
coincide with Stichbury's 80th birthday.
As a domestic potter, Stichbury believes in freedom of expression while retaining the importance of function. As he has
said: "It has been my belief that the potter should make pots that please them - if others appreciate the work that is
produced then that is an extra bonus. I am grateful and proud to have been part of the exciting and creative pottery
scene from the early 1950s." PUBLIC PROGRAMME OF EVENTS SUNDAY 20 JUNE, 2PM 'A Potter in Nigeria' - A talk from Peter
Stichbury on his career and the exhibition. In the Education Room. SATURDAY 24 JULY, 11AM Take a guided tour of the
exhibition with guest curator, Justine Olsen.
John Edgar: Calculus ON DISPLAY UNTIL 27 AUGUST
Featuring 100 altered stones, John Edgar's Calculus is a touring exhibition which reflects the artist's two decades of
work with greywacke stone.
Using glass, jasper, lapus lazuli and marble to intercut the greywacke with mathematical precision, Auckland sculptor,
John Edgar has created a series of exquisite abstract miniatures.
Accompanying the smaller stones are five altered boulders, or 'touchstones' which invite visitors to run their hand over
the smooth surface.
Calculus is toured by The Dowse, Lower Hutt.
Titian Studio Ware - the Ceramic Art of Cameron Brown ON DISPLAY UNTIL 8 AUGUST
'Titian Studio Ware: the ceramic art of Cameron Brown', explores the world of 'pop' ceramics.
The exhibition presents a collection of Titian's slip-cast ceramics from the 1950s and '60s, and explores the themes of
pop ceramics and New Zealand's neo-classical influences.
