Opera returns to the Coast
A $15,000 grant from The West Coast Development Trust has secured the return of The National Business Review New Zealand
Opera to the West Coast.
A performance of the Opera Cosi fan Tutte will be staged in Greymouth on the 31st of July.
This is the second national tour by the opera company which is dedicated to taking performances to ‘far flung’ parts of
New Zealand.
Highly dependent on sponsorship, last year’s very professional production of The Barber of Seville was also supported by
The Development Trust.
“We’re supporting it because the opera contributes to the vibrancy of our community and the quality of life on the
Coast” says Development Trust chairman Frank Dooley. For many Coasters the opera will be an introduction to this art
form. In particular, The Development Trust is talking to the opera company’s director about their artists to meet with
and encourage musically minded children while they are here on the Coast.
Additional benefits of the tour include the financial spin-off from the 32-strong touring company staying on the Coast
for three days, says Frank Dooley.
