Rialto Entertainment has picked up some of the hottest titles coming out of the Cannes Film Festival, it was announced today.
And the winner is…The Grand Prix Prize was awarded to Chan-Wook for his film Old Boy. Chan Wook the South Korean director said “I would like to thank all the members of the Jury and the Cannes Festival, I met Roman Polanski at a party and we had out photograph taken together. That was already such and honour that I really didn’t expect to win a prize” Old Boy is a story about pursuit and revenge, and is the most anticipated thriller of this year, it is due for release late 2004 after its showing in the Incredible section of the New Zealand Film Festival!
From the producer of Monster’s Ball comes the stunningly crafted work of first-time director Nicole Kassell, The Woodsman screened to incredible audiences this year at both Sundance and Cannes. “Kevin Bacon’s haunting performance will help this incredibly powerful film find an audience.”VARIETY The Woodsman is likely to provoke a great deal of interest when it is release in early 2005 for its controversial subject material. Kevin Bacon is touted to be in contention for an Oscar for this role. The US distributor, Newmarket Films, who released Monster and Passion of the Christ, will be hitting this film hard in the US. Their incredible publicity will certainly have a positive flow on effect for Rialto’s release into Australasia.
Rialto has picked up the wonderful comedy Seducing Doctor Lewis. A huge commercial hit in its native French Canada, the recipient of 11 Genie nominations and an Audience Award winner at Sundance, this debut feature from Jean-Francois Pouliot is one of those comedies that practically nudges you in the ribs while you're watching to remind you how funny it is. HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Seducing Doctor Lewis concerns the frantic efforts of the residents of an impoverished Quebec fishing village to fool a big-city doctor into becoming their full-time medical caretaker. Judging by the rapturous audience reactions the film has received, it will be a smash hit with the audiences that loved films like Waking Ned Devine!
Rialto is thrilled to have acquired the incredible Al Jazera documentary Control Room, which opened exceedingly well doing $50,000 for the week at the Film Forum in New York breaking a 35 year record! Control Room neatly bridges the gap between timeless and timely; timeless because it locates itself in the midst of the ongoing cultural clash between Western and Arab worlds; timely because it does so through the prism of satellite television’s impact on how viewers receive information worldwide – from news providers, driven by military objectives. Control Room is a seminal documentary that explores how truth is gathered, presented and ultimately created by those who deliver it.
And lastly, Rialto has picked up the incredibly funny British comedy School For Seduction aimed at the Calender Girls audience, this film will boast a wide release in 2005. A delightful cast brings this film to life, including the hot pin up girl Kelly Brook, Neil Stuke familiar to television audiences from the hit comedy “Game On” and BAFTA winning actress Margi Clarke to name just a few.
