The New Zealand Improvised Music Charitable Trust is presenting throughout 2004 Sunday night concerts showcasing
contemporary aural art, ranging from experimental electronics to classical composition, from free jazz to turntablism.
The first series, curated by Anthony Donaldson, will be held from June 6th to June 27th. Anthony Donaldson has a long
and full history in New Zealand Music. Former member of Don McGlashin's classic group, The Front Lawn as well as former
Six Volt, Donaldson has over the last three decades performed in groups creating music for the mainstream and the
avant-garde. In recent years his close association with Wellington's avant-garde jazz and improvised music scene has
inspired and created many musical groups and projects, including The Village Idiots, the Labcoats and the Flower
Orphans.
Donaldson is uniquely qualified to present the first series of the continuing New Music Series of contemporary aural
art, entitled Nights of the Flaming Anvil.
The New Music Series will continue on Sunday nights throughout 2004 under a variety of curators with a focus on
contemporary music, the avant-garde and explorative music.
Nights of the Flaming Anvil features:
June 6th Richard Nunns and Alphabethead - Nunns is a world expert in Taonga Puoro, traditional Maori instrumentation.
He is joined by former national ITF champion on turntables and Anthony Donaldson on drums.
June 13th 175 East - Auckland's only contemporary classical ensemble featuring members of the Auckland and Christchurch
Philharmonias. This concert features new works written especially for the ensemble by NZ composers Rachel Clement,
Dorothy Ker and Dylan Lardelli, and British composers Bryn Harrison and James Saunders. Each concert also includes a
unique selection of microscores-pieces lasting no longer than 30 seconds, all written for the 2004 175 East concert
series.
June 20th David Long - Member of The Muttonbirds, the Front Lawn and the Labcoats, Long has an extensive history in New
Zealand popular and experimental music. Playing theremin and banjo, he is joined by Alphabethead on turntables and
Anthony Donaldson on drums.
June 27th Lawrence English - Lawrence English is writer, composer and media artist based in Brisbane. Working across a
broad range of art forms, English's work is eclectic and characterises a long-term exploration of various themes, most
recently audio/visual environments.
