‘We are both exile and homecomer’
Roadworks, a collaborative theatre company established by Sally Rodwell, has devised a new work that explores themes of
migration and the movement of people from place to place. Unbearable Journeys combines physical theatre, extraordinary
masks, puppets, butoh, dance, lo-fi multi-media and live music to present a challenging and evocative view of why humans
attempt to create new lives for themselves in new places. The text is drawn from many sources: the writings of Allan
Brunton, Albert Camus, Ksenija Chobanovich, Samuel Beckett, Janet Frame, Doris Lessing, Sally Rodwell, and Marina
Tsvetayeva
‘It is NOT a case of first in, first served!’
Anyone who has ever had to deal with the bureaucracy and logistics concerned with moving to another place will instantly
recognise the dilemmas faced by some of the characters in this show: the requirement to prove yourself over and over
again, only to discover that the promised land is not all it seems, and perhaps not what you wanted after all.
‘If someone lit a match just now, the sky would explode.’
Unbearable Journeys promises to be an expedition through a landscape of poetry, drama and comedy for the audience. This
style of devised, physical theatre is will challenge and entertain, and is unique to Roadworks. Where else would you
find a giant crow, a manic taxi driver, a desperate asylum seeker and a devout priest singing songs to the moon?
