Pagan and Global Routes Announce New Deal
International Release Action Abounds
NZ Music Month Madness
Firstly, a big welcome goes out to new IMNZ members Reliable Recordings (‘Sun Valley Sounds 2’, Subware), Truetone
(Shapeshifter), Rattle (Hirini Melbourne and Richard Nunns and more) and Red Rocks Records (Windy City Strugglers, ‘Big
Water’ etc). The IMNZ crew gets bigger each month and we’ re stoked to have such quality labels swelling the ranks.
Pagan Records have signed a new record distribution deal with Global Routes since parting ways with EMI after a 12-year
relationship. “The music industry is facing a lot of challenges internationally, we felt it was only a matter of time
before those issues impacted locally”, says Managing Director Tim Moon. “So we decided to take control of our destiny,
re-gain control of our valuable catalogue and launch a new approach to marketing music in New Zealand”.
In international news, Baitercell and Schumacher's remix of Cobra by U.K. act Aquasky vs Masterblaster is out worldwide
on 12" next week. Already it has been topping DJ's playlist charts and it has received the support of none other than
Orbital's Phil Hartnoll and has entered the DJ Magazine Beats & Breaks Chart at #11.
Minuit's debut LP "The 88" (Tardus Music) has been licensed by Australian label Inertia, who will release the record in
August of this year. Minuit have two tours booked in July and October that will see them playing Australia wide in
support of the release.
After Shapeshifter's album release, ‘Riddim Wise LP’ on March 1 (Truetone, distributed by Rhythmethod), the band
completed a very successful tour throughout New Zealand, selling out almost every show. The album is being released in
Australia mid June.
While it’s NZ Music Month pretty much all year round for us, there are certainly a few special activities happening
during May. Powertool Records is putting on four Kaleidoscope World Series gigs in May, travelling to Hamilton, New
Plymouth, Wellington and Auckland. Powertool are also this month releasing new records from Edward Gains, Robert Scott,
The Shrugs and ‘Here Come the Bulletholes Re-load’; where various artists cover songs from the original Bulletholes
album.
Adeaze (Dawn Raid) have released their debut album ‘Always and For Real’. The boys also performed at the annual RBA
showcase; also present were Lucid 3 who are also from the IMNZ family (Muse) and who will be releasing their album ‘All
Things Leading To This’ in June.
On May 27 Te Vaka (King Music) return with their 4th album, ‘Tutuki’. The lead single Tamahana is the title theme for
the film ‘The Legend of Johnny Lingo’. This is the first track by Te Vaka with predominantly English lyrics.
In news from Mai Music, Katchafire will appear at a number of radio-sponsored events over May, then they tour Australia
in late May before heading to the US in August for 3 dates there. Last week they broke the record for the bar take at
the Poenamu in Auckland, over $25k in 1 night! Whirimako Black’s first single and video from her forthcoming album
‘Tangihaku’ are released to coincide with NZ Music Month. Round 3 of Rhythmnation, the Coke-sponsored unsigned artist
talent quest is now on. Round 2 winners, Southern Dynasty, are in the studio with Chris Macro recording their winning
entry and Round 1winners Mes n’ Wylde will have their single out soon.
Stylus (Wildside) are on a national tour in May. The band is doing Hamilton, Dunedin, Christchurch and Nelson as well as
dates in the Auckland region. Paselode’s CD ‘The Taming of the Wasps’ is in stores now and their Wellington launch gig
is at Indigo on May 21. The Accelerants are on tour with Fur Patrol so this is a chance for South Island and Hamilton
residents to see them for the first time.
Reliable Recordings has just released ‘Sun Valley Sounds 2’, representing some of New Zealand’s finest production talent
including Dick Johnson, Soane, ReactorMusic, Reed & Radley, Subware, Cuffy & LeonD. The Sun Valley All Stars are currently on the road for a series of release parties.
Sugarlicks is releasing ‘Ultrasound 2017’ late May, which will be taken live to Melbourne and Sydney for shows from May
28-31st.
Red Rocks Records have entered the world of reality music videos. The Windy City Strugglers have just finished filming a
video for She Drives from their new album ‘Kingfisher’; directed by Costa Botes (‘Forgotten Silver’ etc). One of the
scenes in the video features singer/guitarist Bill Lake as a blind man being knocked to the ground and robbed of his
guitar. During filming some concerned citizens (unaware of the fact that a video was being made) came to Bill's rescue
and pursued the villain down Cuba Street!
Legend Music are now in their second year of business and are growing like the proverbial mushroom. Adrian Stuckey has
recently been working alongside Eddie Rayner, as Assistant Music Producer for ‘NZ Idol’ and Co-Producer of the single,
Yesterday Was Just the Beginning of My Life, and the ‘Cast’ album, camping out at the studio to finish by the deadline.
Alastair Riddell’s long-awaited new album will be released in the next few weeks.
Capitalrecordings in association with Map Films have released the original motion picture soundtrack for the Map Films’
production ‘For Good’. Shayne Carter and production partner Nick Roughan have delivered a haunting set of 14 pieces of
music to accompany the acclaimed film.
Pine, Fang and Red Drum have all been keeping the Arch Hill studios busy, noisy and sleepless as of late. They will have
singles/albums/videos or all three ready for blazing fireside listening action this winter.
