Throughout May, Happy is proud to present the country’s foremost exponents of bop and post bop jazz for a series of concerts with Madam Zzaj on Wednesday nights at 9pm.
Roger Sellers (drums) and Paul Dyne (bass) are an internationally respected rhythm section and have been performing together for several decades in Wellington and throughout the world. Sellers and Dyne perform regularly at The Lido on Sunday nights. They have played with jazz legends such as Sonny Stitt, Andrew Hill, Steve Lacy, Pepper Adams and have headlined many an international jazz festival. Both teachers and practitioners of their art, Sellers and Dyne are living treasures in the New Zealand jazz scene.
Jeff Henderson (saxes) is founder of both The Space, legendary avant-garde venue, and of Happy itself. Henderson has been one of the hardest working and most powerful jazz and avant-garde musicians in the country. He is artistic director of the Wellington International Jazz Festival and has played with the likes of Marilyn Crispell, Evan Parker, Han Bennink as well as local groups Stroma, The Ortiz Funeral Directors and many others. Henderson is the heart of the improvised music and free jazz community.
The trio have been performing together for several years and have honed their music to a fine point. They produce bop and post bop music that is exciting and innovative.
