Luke Hurley Plays Cathedral Square as part of New Zealand Music Month
Free Friday Lunchtime Concert, Friday May 7th, 12.15pm to 1.15pm, Cathedral Square.
Since the early 1980's Luke has been performing throughout New Zealand, and this Friday lunchtime he brings his talent to a free concert in Cathedral Square.
Hailing from Dunedin, Hurley has for many years represented the cutting edge of acoustic music in New Zealand while remaining one of New Zealand's great-unknown musicians.
A solo artist who accompanies himself on guitar, Luke lets his words speak for themself. He has recorded four LP's, an EP, and a compilation CD of his best, "Stop Look Listen" and the CD "Reha". His charisma has appealed to many and, unlike a lot of musicians in his vein, he's managed to make a living in New Zealand. Though he claims "it is not easy, not easy at all being a full time musician in New Zealand".
His style has evolved with years. What began as a mainly rhythmic percussive style has become progressively more melodic. But it hasn't been easy. "I plodded on in my own rhythmic monotone's for years before the melody started coming" he claims. His words deal with the tangled emotions of personal relationships, protest songs and are a reflection for modern day life. With more than enough food for thought in these times.
