Explore the Culture of Vietnam at Auckland Museum
Visitors to the Museum on Sunday 16 May will have the opportunity to enjoy the variety and colour of the Vietnamese
cultural landscape with a Living Treasures Day of special Vietnamese activities.
The day has been organised to coincide with our special exhibition “Another Vietnam: Pictures of the War from the Other
Side” a collection of startling, never-before-published images of the Vietnam War by North Vietnamese photographers.
They are accompanied by an exhibition profiling New Zealanders' memories of power politics, protest and the sacrifice
made by our own soldiers in this unpopular war, called “Vietnam: A Kiwi Snapshot”. Both exhibitions are on display until
6 June. Highlights of the day include a talk and slideshow, “From War to Tourism: the Vietnam of Today” with General
Manager of Active Asia, Paul Safe.
Celia Caughey (Vietnam Chapter Chair of the Asean New Zealand Combined Business Council and former Trade Commissioner
and Consul General of Ho Chi Minh City) discusses “Understanding Vietnamese Culture – History, Philosophy, Literature
and Music”.
“Vietnam After the Fire” is a documentary screening revealing how the Vietnamese of the 90s feel about the Vietnam war
and its effect on their country. Whilst “Vietnam Today: People, Land and Culture” delves into the history, culture and
politics of this beautiful and complex country and will be playing continuously throughout the day.
Whilst the grown-ups take in the talks, documentaries and eye-opening exhibitions, there will be activities to keep the
kids entertained in the Children’s Discovery Centres.
Kids can make their own colourful Vietnamese dragons and create fun dragon scales for our giant dragon! Admission is by
usual Museum donation entry. $5 per adult is appreciated, children are free.
Charges apply for the special exhibition “Another Vietnam: Pictures of the War from the Other Side”, $8 per adult, $6
per concession and $4 per child. -----
