We are truly proud to present to you ten new tasty nuggets from the Reliable stable.

Sun Valley Sound 2 represents some of New Zealand’s finest production talent including Dick Johnson, Soane, ReactorMusic, Reed & Radley, Subware, Cuffy & LeonD and also introducing new emerging artists Daniel Ward, Tim Richards and Craig Harris.

It’s been Reliable Recordings primary aim to work with people who are fully committed to the development of a healthy and thriving House Music community.

All the artists on Sun Valley Sound Part 2 are active contributors to our local music scene and are the creative forces behind the Sinister Sound System, Electric, Black Vinyl, Home Made Productions and of course our own Reliable Recordings club night: Sun Valley Sound System!

Reliable’s origins lie in the principle that if we work our talents collectively we can accomplish great things. We have built up a solid core of people we work with regularly and it is our sole objective to release music by the cream of established and upcoming New Zealand producers.

To celebrate the launch of this cracking new chapter in the development of our New Zealand house scene the Sun Valley All Stars will be taking to the road for a series of release parties.

Questions and answers from Reliable Recordings:

When was the label founded? By whom was it founded? Who runs the label currently? What is each person’s role?

Reliable Recordings was set up in 1998 by Joost Langeveld. Joost is the Label Manager and A person. In 2001 Roger Perry became involved, initially fulfilling the role of A manager but has more recently taken on responsibility of coordinating and overseeing Reliable related ‘live’ performances, tours and Club Nights as well.

Joost and Roger together control Reliable’s aesthetics in both sound and vision. Reliable Recordings is in essence an artist run Label.

Why did you originally establish the label? In other words, why was it that you wanted to have your own label as opposed to release your music on other labels?

The label was established to create an outlet for/and to profile New Zealand House music producers. Our geographic isolation left us few opportunities to explore other avenues. The establishment of the label enabled us to sample visiting international DJ/Producers with local product.

What is the musical philosophy of the label?

To produce, nurture and promote quality New Zealand music.

How do you decide which tracks to release? What do you think is the sound of the label?

We obviously need to like the track and then thoroughly Club test it to check the crowd reaction. TechHouse, House, Deep House

Is one of your goals to promote New Zealand artists whom you think are talented?

To some extent but not exclusively. We have released tracks from visiting DJ/Producers like DJ Joshua, Asad Risvi (Two Right Wrongans), Flow, Dick ‘Magik’ Johnson and Ant Plate (one half from RhythmPlate). Having said that, we do encourage our immediate peers to get involved. I guess whoever gets considered needs to be an active participant in our Music community.

Does Reliable do any club nights in New Zealand? Has the label done any tours?

Yes, we run a 6-weekly club night called ‘the Sun Valley Sound System’ which has been going for some 18 months or so …. Also, all our major releases (full albums and compilations) are promoted with a nationwide tour. Our next tour is scheduled for May and June 2004 to promote the release of ‘Sun Valley Sound volume two’.

Sun Valley All-Stars

A collaborative effort between various producers and musicians connected with Reliable Recordings and the Sun Valley Sound Studio. The All–Stars project is an opportunity to explore more musical avenues, live instrumentation augmented with samples and programmed beats. Sun Valley All-Stars is a loose, freeflowing musical project featuring, amongst others, Sebastian Tanganui-Lloyd, Cuffy, Roger Perry, Joost, Wairere Iti and pretty much whoever is hanging around the studio at the time and wants to get involved.

Craig Harris and Tim Richards

This track is one of Craig and Tim's most recent. The boys have been on a roller coaster ride over the past year. With releases on Reliable Recordings and Om out this year, and receiving glowing public accolades from veterans Greg Churchill and Dick Johnson, Craig and Tim are gaining respect as engineers and musicians. They are continuing to develop their signature sound. Expect big things from these boys in the future.

Dick ‘Magik J’ Johnson

DJ Dick Johnson’s reputation for rocking a party began amidst the acid house madness of Manchester’s infamous Hacienda, where he was Saturday night resident alongside Graeme Park and Tom Wainright. He soon had his own room The 5th Man, where the legendary basement sessions became a part of club history. Residencies followed at Federation, Spice and Nottingham’s Renaissance.

Between 1994 and 95, Johnson started producing tracks for Cream’s Olympic label, New Order’s Pleasure Recordings and Manchester’s Paperecordings collective. Shortly afterwards, he established Shaboom Records with Mark Bell and Ben Davis.

A man of many monikers, Johnson records on his own as Magik Johnson/Magik J, as Del-5 with Ben Davis, and alongside Soane as Troffman. His music has been released on such influential imprints as Danny Tenaglia’s Twisted label, Layo & Bushwacka’s End Recordings, KAOS in Portugal and Paperecordings – and he has completed remixes for Crazy Penis, DJ Sneak, Joey Negro, Q-Burns, Human League, Neon Heights and many others.

Dick Johnson was one of the first UK DJs to pay regular visits to New Zealand from 1994 onwards, and in 2001 he decided to permanently relocate his base to the far side of the planet. He wasted no time in making his mark – taking his own ELECTRIC tours on the road up and down New Zealand, releasing the clubnight’s companion ELECTRIC CD through Festival Mushroom Records, producing music for the national television network, and remixing seminal local artists, including the Headless Chickens and Subware.

Reed

Reed and Radley have clocked up more than 25 years in the studio and behind the Technics. They cut their clubbing teeth in northern England before taking their passion for house music one step further.

Chris Reed's career began more than a decade ago in Leeds, then one of Britain's clubbing capitals. After signing to Liverpool's 3 Beat label, he produced a string of singles under the Neuro name. The first, Initiate, was championed by Mixmag and Manchester's pioneering Eastern Bloc record shop. The most successful, Mama, was licensed to groundbreaking Belgian label R and appeared on a string of compilations around the world. After leaving Leeds, Chris returned to hometown Manchester, setting up a home studio and DJing at the Home club. He moved to New Zealand in 1999 and after stints in Queenstown and Wellington settled in Auckland, where he made a swift return to the studio with Paul Radley.

Paul's career also started in Leeds. He regularly played at the Orbit, which went on to become Britain's longest-running regular club night, and co-promoted Mindbiscuit, a monthly deep house affair. Paul was a regular fixture behind the decks at some of northern England's most discerning nights and completed a sound engineering course in Manchester before moving to New Zealand, via Sydney. Both are firmly established in Auckland's house scene, playing regularly at the city's best clubs. Chris also co-hosts George FM's flagship Saturday morning show, English Breakfast. Together they are carving out a reputation as producers of high-quality deep, driving grooves. Their productions have graced both volumes of Reliable Recordings' Sun Valley Sounds while British institution DIY has licensed their four-track Foundations EP. Reed and Radley are putting the finishing touches to their next two EPs which will be released later this year.

Subware

Subware is the musical collaboration between label manager Joost Langeveld and DJ Jason ‘ Rockpig’ Hall . Formed in 1998 Subware quickly gained an enthusiastic following.

Part of the Reliable Recordings family of artists, Subware makes music with a bass heavy, groove oriented and slightly twisted sensibility.

From ’98 on Subware quickly built a reputation as a feisty, twisted live experience. More recently their performances have developed a more organic approach incorporating live musicians and singers to make Subware an even more exciting experience.

Subware has released tracks on Reliable Recordings, Defender Music, Influence Records, Freq Records, Sound Fiction, Shaboom and Global Underground

ReactorMusic

ReactorMusic is the musical collaboration between Reliable head honchos Roger Perry and Joost Langeveld. The ultimate pairing of top DJ and Studio wizard.

The ReactorMusic guys make fat, dirty fucked up House music for real House heads. Working together now for about 6 years Roger and Joost have spent a good while getting their sound right.

ReactorMusic have released tracks on Wrong, Shaboom, Global Underground, Reliable and FMR.

Roger is one of the true innovators of the New Zealand Club music community. His DJ-ing career began in the mid-80’s as a sprightly seventeen year old playing HipHop, Funk, Boogie, Electro and what was later to became known as House Music. Roger is widely credited for introducing House music to the Clubs of NZ. Instrumental in the establishment of seminal Clubs like The Asylum, The Playground, Siren, Calibre and more recently the Wyndham Bowling Club.

Roger has DJ’ed alongside everyone from Derrick Carter, Doc Martin, Crazy Penis through to Qburns, Derrick May and Tiefschwarz to name but a few. Roger has also toured and promoted the likes of Luke Solomon, Inland Knights, Huggy, Erik Rug and Phil Asher amongst others.

Joost is one of the leading producers/engineers of New Zealand’s Club music scene. Joost started his musical career in the early eighties as a bass player. In 1986 he hooked up with a jaded Dutch prog rocker who taught everything he knew about synthesizers and computer music. Joost got more into programming and production in the early 90’s producing tracks with acts like NRA, Strawpeople Jules Issa, Pitch Black, DLT, OJ and RhythmSlave and Mark deClive-Lowe plus his own collaborations; NRA, Nemesis Dub Systems, Unitone HiFi, ReactorMusic and Subware.

From 1992 till 1996 Joost worked and lived in New York, running B-Rave Studios in SoHo and producing tracks for Unitone Hifi and German record label Incoming!. Upon his return to New Zealand he touched base with Roger again and ReactorMusic was born.

Joosts productions have been released on numerous National and International labels. Shaboom (UK), Global Underground (UK), Defender Music (UK), Wrong (UK), Influence Records(UK), Freq Records(NZ), Sound Fiction(AUS), Red Melon(USA), Universal, Sony Music, Kog Transmissions, Oceania Records (France), Select(USA), Sony (NZ/AUS), Universal (NZ/AUS), FMR (NZ) plus more.

Both Roger and Joost actively run and manage the label Reliable Recordings, Sun Valley Sound Volume2 is the label’s 11th release to date.

Cuffy

Hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, Cuffy & Leon D are no strangers to the NZ dance music scene having achieved top producer and DJ status in their home country. Credited with releases on a number of regional labels over the past decade, Cuffy & Leon D are poised to storm the global house community with their crisp, hook-laden productions and musically inspired sounds.

Cuffy and Leon teamed up in 1999. Combining their gear and knowledge in pursuit of creating their own sound.

Cuffy started DJing mid '97 and currently has regular DJ slots at Auckland's Ink Bar, Wyndham Bowling Club, Centro, Mesh, Calibre and Coast amongst others....

As well as being part of the 2000 intake for the Red Bull DJ Academy in Dublin, Cuffy has DJ'd abroad including gigs with the likes of: Jonathan Yeo @ Zouk Club in Singapore Terry Farley @ The Kitchen in Dublin Derrick May @ Fix in Sydney FC Kahuna; Dano @ DNA Lounge in San Fran.

Leon D cut his musical teeth playing guitar in rock band Fat Mannequin, which introduced him to both the live stage and studio environment from age 16. In '98, frustrated by the lack of tonal variety in guitars, Leon D swapped his for a collection of keyboards and samplers, and the rest is history. As a natural progression from producing dance music, Leon D started DJing late 1998.

Currently, he holds regular DJ slots at Auckland's Ink Bar, Wyndham Bowling Club and Centro Lounge and is a regular at Wellington bars Studionine and Paradiso. Leon D has clocked up support slots for many international acts including Ian Pooley, Eddie Matos, FC Kahuna, DJ Joshua, Dano, Miles Hollway, Dick Johnson and Singapore's Jonathan Yeo.

Daniel Ward

With his musical roots in hardcore drumming Daniel appreciates the angry side of music as is evident in 'Filthy'. But with so much of his life dedicated to funk and hiphop (he is a percussionist for the Hot Grits & House of Downtown as well as producing hiphop), Daniel definately understands a groove.

These traits are demonstrated best when he DJs, going from original 70s funk right through house music to the darkest tech grooves whilst keeping the same underlying vibe. These days his dark side is exorcised through being one half of the Sinister Sound System and through creating tracks like 'Filthy'.
