"Holy, holy, holy" by Kathy Bartlett
On the 13th of April "Holy, holy, holy", a series of new paintings by Wellington-based artist Kathy Bartlett will appear at the Wellington Cathedral in Molesworth Street. This series of work contains paintings of "everyday" Wellingtonians presented as saints. The purpose of the work is to portray the holy and sacred essence of all people and the paintings are in the iconic format traditionally used since the time of the early church to portry the holy and beatified saints.
The Wellington Cathedral is the centre of the Anglican church in Wellington which, ironically, unlike other churches (e.g. the Catholic and Orthodox Christian), has no tradition of icons at all. The paintings will be shown within the main building of the cathedral, greatly enhancing the spiritual nature of the work.
Bartlett insists that it is good for people to realise that everyone is holy and sacred, and invites and encourages people from all works of life to view her work.
