New Zealand Selects Its 2004 Harry Brittain Fellows
Journalists Kirsty Pickett from The Southland Times and Geoff Collett from The Press in Christchurch have been selected
by the Commonwealth Press Union (New Zealand Section) as Harry Brittain Fellows for 2004.
The Harry Brittain Fellowship was established by the CPU in London in 1960 to provide ten young and promising
journalists from Commonwealth countries the opportunity to undertake a six-week period of work, study and social
activities in the United Kingdom. The fellowship is named as a memorial after the founder of the CPU, the late Sir Harry
Brittain.
CPU New Zealand Chairman, Gavin Ellis, said he felt very confident that this year’s fellows would maintain the very high
standard that New Zealanders had established in the fellowship since 1960. This year an additional fellow was selected
as a result of sponsorship by Norske Skog (Australasia) Pty.
“Normally we only get the opportunity to select one person to go from New Zealand but this year, we were grateful for
the opportunity of the Norske Skog sponsorship which rotates between this country, Australia and the Pacific,” said Mr
