Runners, wild pigs and mushrooms!
Press release from Riverhead Adventures, Sunday 21st March It's an endurance event with a difference where wild runners meet wild pigs on tracks littered with wild mushrooms! There's something special about running through Riverhead Forest early in the morning for hours and hours.
"It's unique", says Carolynn Tassie, New Zealand 100km representative. "You're in a forest, amongst the trees, away from it all. It gives my legs a break from running on the road and there is no traffic", says Carolynn.
The Eighth Riverhead Forest 30km and 50km run/walk is on Sunday 28th March. Organiser, Gary Regtien says the race has some new features, "In past years Mushroom Mountain was a highlight of the course but this has literally been flattened. So, we have found a new track and called it Mushroom Flats! There are lots of bridges this year too", says Gary.
John O'Donnell has competed four times before and loves the event. "I like running in the forest, I especially like the clean air and the fact there is no traffic", says John.
"The only drag is getting up at 4am to make it to the start." Gary is expecting around 50 people for the 6am start. The race, which begins and ends at Riverhead Hall, is open to both walkers and runners. For first timers the 30km is recommended.
And the wild pigs? "Yes", says Gary, "There are wild pigs in the forest but they usually run off when they hear people coming."
