Creative New Zealand announces two artist residencies in Asia
Two new artist residencies in Asia - this year at the Sanskriti Foundation of India in New Delhi and the Redgate Gallery
in Beijing, China - have been announced by the Arts Board of Creative New Zealand in partnership with the Asia 2000
Foundation, New Zealand.
Creative New Zealand will cover the cost of accommodation and facilities ($3500 in New Delhi and $5400 in Beijing) as
well as providing the artists with a stipend of $10,000 each while they are in residence. The Asia 2000 Foundation, New
Zealand will meet the cost of return airfares.
Arts Board Chair Murray Shaw welcomed the support of the Asian 2000 Foundation, New Zealand and said the residencies
were exciting opportunities for New Zealand artists to respond to living and working in a different culture.
"Asia offers a wide range of opportunities for artists and the Arts Board is keen to profile some of these
opportunities," Mr Shaw said. "By offering these residencies, we hope that New Zealand artists will be encouraged to
develop projects inspired by the experience of the residency and build networks throughout Asia."
This year's residencies are open to writers, visual artists and craft/object artists. Both residencies are for three
months and are aimed at established artists who wish to pursue projects that relate to the location or the facilities of
the host organisation. Priority will also be given to applicants who show an appreciation of the environment and culture
of the residency's country.
Beijing's Red Gate Gallery has exhibited contemporary Chinese artists for almost 12 years. Its well-established
residency programme offers studios and accommodation, and it also has access to the facilities of the Beijing Arts
Academy. The residencies are available to a limited number of international visual artists, writers and craft/object
artists.
The Sanskriti residency programme is offered by the Sanskriti Foundation of India to writers, visual artists and
craft/object artists from India and throughout the world. The accommodation and facilities for this residency are based
at the Sanskriti Foundation's Kendra campus near New Delhi.
The deadline for applications for both residencies is 15 May 2004. Artists will be expected to take up the residency in
Beijing between October and December 2004, and the residency in Delhi between September 2004 and April 2005.
