'Killer' Comedy About Killing
What makes a seemingly normal person turn into a killer? Is a comedy about killing something you should attend when it
arrives as part of the 2004 New Zealand International Comedy Festival?
When searching his own name on the internet, Terry Williams noticed that his website was top of the list, but seven
others belonged to murderers on death row proclaiming their innocence. (Then there was the guitarist Terry Williams from
Kenny Rogers and the First Edition.)
Comedy producer/performer Terry Williams has read widely about the topic. This monologue with mood swings presents a
series of fictional characters who each reveal something of themselves in retrospective justifications of their murders.
Comedy is about connection and what draws the audience in is that everyone will relate to their observations. "All of us
will have had days like that guy did. We just didn't kill someone as a result."
The title '360 Degrees Of Terry Williams' comes from 360 degrees Celsius being the temperature at which the human body
will literally explode. Besides says Williams, "If my show title starts with a number instead of a letter, then it
appears at the top of the list!"
Comedy is riddled with violent expressions. Jokes die, audiences split their sides laughing and comedians who do well
are said to have killed. What better medium than comedy to delve into the darkness in all of us? Charlie Chaplin once
said, "Comedy is tragedy plus time."
As the audiences leave, the question they may well be asking themselves is why more seemingly normal people don't kill?
