Sharaku: Interpreted by Japan's Contemporary Artists
An exhibition of high quality reproductions of woodblock prints by the famous eighteenth century artist Sharaku
presented alongside interpretative works by contemporary Japanese graphic and fine artists will be held at the Wallace
Trust Gallery from Wednesday 17th March until Wednesday 31st of March.
The exhibition takes as its theme Toshusai Sharaku, known throughout Japan and the world for his bust portraits of
Kabuki actors, and presents posters, paintings and three dimensional works by today's artists as they freely interpret
this foremost master of the ukiyo-e print. This exhibition is made up of three sections that are entitled:
"Reproductions of Sharaku," "Sharaku in Graphic Art" and "Homage to Sharaku."
A catalogue of the exhibition, which includes a full explanation of the three sections of the exhibition, can be
