Leading the irie indigenous charge will be Shkeme, a member of the Rio Grande Singers and Gathering of Nations Dance Troupe experienced in both Native American and reggae singing styles. In 1997 Shkeme and musician John Williams formed Native Roots. www.nativeroots.net Dedicated to the sound and spirit of Native American and Reggae music, Native Roots make a unique and dynamic addition to the Native American, and international reggae scene. The album 'Rain Us Love' was the winner for 'Best World Music Recording' at the Native American Music Awards 2002 and the album 'Place I Call Home' was nominated for 'Best Recording by an Independent Label' at the Native American Music Awards in 2000.
Jamming also on the Native Roots vibe will be an eclectic mix hailing from Ngai Takoto to Ngai Tahu and beyond.....an irie collection of local muso's, lyrical sisters and self-confessed dub fiends. You know who they are! They've slept on your couch!
Creative Combat was indigenous initiated by aboriginal and Maori crews when JaseD, Astro, and Bud in collaboration with Maori crews, gigged in Welli last year with aboriginal hip hop crews Gudabah, Local Knowledge, and FreeB.
As Ngai Tahu sound-selector Jah-sta-rascal puts it, "In a nutshell the main mission of Creative Combat is to create and support synergies between indigenous, activist and conscious-music communities. So connecting and continuing that kaupapa is what this Wellington jam is about."
As JaseD said, "Creative Combat is about using popular conscious music and media to reach out to people - especially indigenous youth, but also to create connections with other communities who are also using conscious music forms to express themselves. It's about creating conscious music forms to combat the issues we are faced with in our indigenous communities."
