Triangle Television sponsors Mr India New Zealand
Triangle Television is the major sponsor of Australasia's first Mr India Contest, to be held in Auckland in May.
The Triangle Television Mr India New Zealand 2004 Contest will be a "Bollywood-style" show based on similar, hugely popular competitions held in India.
The pageant, to be held in front of a 3000-strong audience at the Logan Campbell Centre on May 22, will also feature a range of talented entertainers including the winner of the Golden Voice of South Pacific talent quest winner, Indian David Dahadur, dancing troupes Roskill Kaindianz and Scorpio Boys as well as various high school Indian dance groups.
Triangle Television Chief Executive Jim Blackman says the contest is consistent with the Triangle Television's principles and appeals to its target audience.
"The Triangle Television Mr India Contest will be a wonderful, spirited creative multi-cultural event with a strong community focus," says Mr Blackman.
"It's a perfect match with our eclectic programming mix, which ranges from ethnic and spiritual programmes to those with arts, music or community themes. The contest is exactly what Triangle Television is all about and we are delighted to be the sponsor."
Contest organiser Prakash Mani says the Mr India New Zealand contest will be a highlight of the Auckland Indian community's entertainment calendar, especially for those who are familiar with similar events in India.
"Women's modelling contests have been around for a long time, but I believe this will be the first in Australasia that's especially for men."
Only men of Indian origin who live in New Zealand will be eligible to compete. A range of nationalities - including Indian, Fijian, Sri Lankan and Malaysian - is likely to be represented.
Contestants must be single and aged from 18 to 30 years. There will be four modelling categories - Western wear, Indian, casual wear and underwear.
The winner and first two runners-up in each section will win contracts with modelling agencies. The judges will be from the fashion modelling industry.
Entries must be received by March 25. Entry forms are available at the Scorpio entertainment club at Karangahape Road in Auckland or on request from Mr Mani via email: prakash@garuda.co.nz. Auditions will be held in early April, and 15 contestants will be chosen to appear in the grand final on May 22.
Triangle Television is Auckland's only regional, non-commercial television station and has operated as a public broadcaster to Greater Auckland since August 1 1998. The channel screens a mix of regional-access television with international news and information programmes. It is non-profit making and operates with no funding from NZ On Air. Triangle broadcasts 24 hours daily from UHF channel 41.
