Musical picnic in the “Gardens of Paradise”
The Auckland Philharmonia’s annual Summer Matinée (which has been sponsored by Huka Lodge for the past nine years) has
become something of an institution, consistently being “sold-out”, or close to, each year.
Held in the grounds of the Governor General’s residence in Epsom, and suitable for all age groups, the Huka Lodge Summer
Matinée is on Sunday 28 March, from 12-3.30pm, and is an afternoon of fine musical entertainment, with a delicious
picnic hamper for each person attending.
This year the Auckland Philharmonia and guest artists (soprano Patricia Wright, TV and cabaret star Phil Madsen,
conductor Marc Taddei, singers from the Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists programme, dancers from UNITEC, and MC
Maggie Barry, the tall poppy of New Zealand gardening) will take you on a musical stroll through the “Gardens of
Paradise” with works by composers including Beethoven, Dvoøák, Smetana, Vaughan Williams, Bach, Saint-Saëns,
Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich, Fauré and Respighi.
Auckland’s most sophisticated outdoor concert is now in its 19th year, and is a fundraising event for the Auckland
Philharmonia, with the orchestra musicians, conductor and soloists donating their services.
Ticket numbers have been reduced from previous years to ensure everyone has extra room to spread out on the lawn.
Tickets (adults: $65; children under twelve: $25) include the concert plus a generously-filled (regular or vegetarian)
picnic hamper with Villa Maria wine or fruit juice. Phone 0800 744 542 or go to www.aucklandphil.co.nz to make your
booking for this elegant musical occasion.
