Auckland City event cancellations this weekend
Due to extremely poor weather conditions forecast for this weekend Auckland City has cancelled the Auckland
International Cultural Festival, Kantuta Salsa Festival and both Music in Parks events at the Domain Band Rotunda. There
are no rain dates for these events.
Erick Brenstrum, Severe Weather Forecaster for the Met Service, says that eighteen hours from noon on Saturday to 6am on
Sunday, 80-100mm rain is likely about the Hunua and Waitakare ranges, with 60-80mm forecast elsewhere. Strong northerly
winds (possibly to gale force) are also expected with the rain. The remains of tropical cyclone Ivy are due to pass just
out to sea from Coromandel to the East Cape on Sunday. There is about a 30 per cent chance that the tropical cyclone
remnant could come closer, in which case heavy rain and damaging winds are possible in Auckland.
Councillor Scott Milne, Chairperson of the Recreation and Events Committee, says: “It was a tough call for the event
organisers to make due to the amount of work and commitment from all concerned. We are all disappointed, particularly as
the Auckland International Cultural Festival is one of the highlights of the year. However, given the weather predicted,
I feel it is the right decision.”
The details for the events this weekend were:
- Kantuta Salsa Festival was to be held at Tahaki Reserve, Mt Eden on Saturday, 5.30pm-9pm
- Auckland International Cultural Festival was to be held at Potters Park on Sunday 10am-5pm
- Auckland City Music in Parks Montana Jazz at the Rotunda was to be held at Auckland Domain, 2pm-4pm
- Auckland City Music in Parks was to be held at Auckland Domain, 5pm-6.30pm.
Other outdoor events may also be cancelled around Auckland this weekend. Auckland City advises potential event attendees
to call the organiser of the event in the first instance or call the Auckland City Call Centre on (09) 379 2020.
