PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Castle-Hughes To Wear Kiwi Fashion At Oscars
New Zealand fashion designer Jenny Walker is one of a select few designers hand-picked by Keisha Castle-Hughes to dress her for events leading up to The Oscar Awards in Los Angeles.
Jenny’s award-winning ‘Tiki Dress’ that mimics the traditional Maori greenstone carving was fitted to Castle-Hughes in the week before she left for the Oscars. It is likely to be worn by the young Best Actress nominee at one of the star-studded events that make The Oscars the worlds most highly anticipated and photographed occasion.
Keisha will most likely wear Jenny’s Tiki Dress alongside fellow New Zealand nominees at the annual Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles. As the largest precursor event to The Oscars, The Spirit Awards recognise outstanding achievement by independent filmmakers and gain huge international media attention. The Independent Spirit Awards will be held on Saturday 28 February at 2.00pm EST.
Understandably Jenny is delighted with this opportunity as she is at the very early stages of what is likely to be a successful career in fashion.
“I am very happy that Keisha liked the dress enough to take it with her to represent New Zealand at this prestigious event” says Jenny.
Traditional New Zealand Maori art, carvings and culture inspired Jenny’s self-made Tiki Dress. The dress is made of hand-quilted satin, representing the carved Jade (Greenstone) Maori ‘Tiki’ pendant. The quilting allows the depth, light and dark of the carving to be emphasised.
Since her return from Canada in 2003 where she achieved a Diploma in Fashion Design from the Helen Lefeaux Fashion Design School, Jenny has achieved remarkable recognition from the New Zealand Fashion industry. She won the Supreme Award at the 2003 Style Pasifika Awards with her Tiki Dress, winning a $20,000 trip to Milan to soak up the operations of the Versace Fashion House. This, plus the international exposure her Tiki Dress will receive bodes well for the release of her own label in 2004. At just 27 and a new entrant into the fashion scene, Jenny has set her sights high.
Ends.
