“As stars are made intelligible through being seen forming a constellation, so are the conditions of an improvisation organized by intuition to form its identity.”
Happy is proud to present one of Europe’s most respected violinists. Mary Oliver’s work as a soloist encompasses both composed and improvised contemporary music; she has premiered works by Richard Barrett, John Cage, Chaya Czernowin, Morton Feldman, Brian Ferneyhough, George Lewis and Iannis Xenakis among others and worked alongside improvising musicians such as Ab Baars, FURT, Tristan Honsinger, Joelle Leandre, George Lewis, Phil Minton and Evan Parker.
“We’re very excited to host Mary,” says Artistic Director, Jeff Henderson. “We are rarely treated to a performance by artists of her calibre.”
Oliver’s training in Western art music has allowed her to bring the highest level of virtuosity and interpretation to the realization of some of the most difficult and complex notated scores ever produced.
Oliver is the partner of Han Bennink, world renowned drummer who performed in the 2003 Wellington International Jazz Festival with the Eric Boeren 4tet.
Oliver performs on concert at Happy with Jeff Henderson on February 19th.
Oliver also performs at Te Whaea with the Magpie Music Dance Company on February 21st.
