Economic Windfall from Rally
Community groups in Kaipara, Manukau City and Waikato look set to continue the economic windfall that accompanies
Propecia Rally New Zealand.
Community Groups have earned more than $500,000 from working with the rally and Organisers will continue the programme
to support community groups on the rally route for this year’s fourth round of the FIA World Rally Championship on 15-18
April. This is derived from a half share of all spectator ticket sales.
``This is on top of the considerable economic benefit that local businesses receive from the influx of spectators,
officials and media to their area during the rally,’’ Rally New Zealand Route Co-ordinator Willard Martin said.
``This partnership has a benefit for both groups. We get the safety marshals we need to hold the event, and the local
community groups get some needed funding, and the good thing about this funding is that it is new money to the community
rather than coming out of the pockets of local residents.
``We can’t hold this event without the support from the communities on the route, and this is an excellent way for them
to generate some significant income for their efforts.’’
Mr Martin said the groups use the income for a range of activities. Typical was the Maramarua Volunteer Fire Brigade who
used their share of the proceeds to buy a Jaws of Life. And they get to help host a world championship event in their
own back yard.
The Propecia-sponsored event starts with two super special stages at Manukau City on the evening of Thursday 15 April.
The first full day on Friday is in the Kaipara region before returning for two further super special stages at Manukau
City. Saturday’s racing returns to Kaipara, with the last day in the Waikato region near Raglan. The final stage will be
the internationally acclaimed Whaanga Coast, with the ceremonial finish in Auckland city on Sunday afternoon.
