Barbie is Dead, NZ’s only all female improvised comedy show is ready to hit Wellington for the first time ever. Barbie is Dead are performing their unique style of improvisation for two nights only at the Memorial Theatre as part of the NZ Fringe Festival.
This Auckland based troupe start with an unrehearsed movement and then over an hour later the lights go on and the audience leaves wondering how on earth they did that. The free form improv, the monologues, the cleverly interwoven stories, the songs – surely that was scripted?
But no. Barbie is Dead is 100% improvised, 100% female, 100% funny!
Sure, and they’re sexy too.
Barbie is Dead is made up of four of the finest female performers to come out of the Covert Theatre, NZ’s home of improvised comedy.
Cath Campbell, Gillian Berry, Tineke van der Walle (winner of the 2003 NZ female improviser of the year) and TM Bishop make up the troupe.
Barbie is Dead hit the stage with energy and style and give the funny bone a solid whack in the process.
This is an all women troupe who shatter the myth that women aren’t funny!
Barbie is Dead is the brainchild of Wade Jackson the founder of world championship winning act The Improv Bandits. He wanted to create an environment that was supportive of women in comedy theatre, an industry dominated by men.
“Barbie is Dead is not a show just for women,” says Jackson. “Yes, the cast are women but the real emphasis is on performing good improv in a way rarely seen in New Zealand. Although it’s a celebration of funny women, we’re not ramming it down anyone’s throat. It’s four talented actors on stage who just happen to be women.”
The aim is for the show to entertain but it also inspires other women into the world of performing.
The show is created and unfolds live before the audience’s eyes but regardless of what happens you can bet your bottom dollar each Barbie is Dead show is filled with fun, excitement, laughter and mayhem!
Don’t miss this kick-ass all girl improv troupe as they break barriers and deliver stunning performances that will leave you breathless.
