FRINGE '04: Kanzsu Ensemble
KANZSU ENSEMBLE - PRESS RELEASE – FRINGE NZ 2004
The Kanzsu Ensemble will present their Fringe NZ Festival concert on Sunday 29 February at 4pm at St Marks Church, 58
Woburn Road, Lower Hutt. In this concert they will perform works by Piazzolla, Mozart and Dvorak.
Kanzsu was formed, last year, by Lower Hutt musicians Helen Weir and Tessa Olivier, and Khandhallah musician Jane Brown
in order to play and perform chamber music for small ensemble groups. They chose the name Kanzsu as it is an anagram of
the six letters that form the abbreviations for the three countries they are from.
All three members of the group perform regularly throughout the greater Wellington region presenting chamber music
concerts and also playing with the NGC
Wellington Sinfonia. In addition to performing they work as teachers, teaching both in schools and in private music
studios. They have a strong commitment to chamber music and aim to make quality music available to adults and young
people alike. Performing at St Marks will give Hutt residents an opportunity to share great chamber music that is easy
to listen to and accessible to everyone.
With an instrumentation that includes Helen Weir – violin, Tessa Olivier - piano and viola and Jane Brown – cello, they
are able to use a wide range of music that can be taken from both the string trio repertoire and the piano trio
repertoire. Kanzsu also have a keen interest in inviting guest artists to perform. For this concert they will be joined
by guest artist Svetlana Piankova. They are particularly excited about working with Svetlana as she is a brilliant
flutist whose playing blends superbly with that of Kanzsu’s string ensemble. Svetlana has performed with the Russian
State TV and Radio Orchestra, Moscow State Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. Since moving to
New Zealand in 2000 with her family she has performed in chamber music groups, as a soloist and with the NGC Wellington
Sinfonia. She also teaches flute in Palmerton North area.
Svetlana will perform the Flute Quartet in D Major K285 by Mozart while the other works in the programme are Verano
(Summer), Invierno (Winter), Primavera (Spring)& the Piano Trio no4 in E minor (Dumky) by Dvorak.

group is from. Kanzsu’s music is exciting and invigorating to listen to. They are acclaimed for their energy, enthusiasm

Verano, Invierno, Primavera, Porteno - Astor Piazzolla,
Astor Piazzolla is renowned for creating music which is a fusion between Latin American Tango and serious art music.
Verano(Summer),Invierno(Winter),
Primavera(Spring) are taken from his set of pieces entitled Cuatro Estaciones Portenas. These three pieces capture the
very essence of passion, longing, and intrigue that is at the heart of Tango while at the same time are superbly
written, serious musical compositions.
Flute Quartet in D, K285 - Mozart with Svetlana Piankova – Flute
Guest Artist with Kanzsu and performing Mozart’s beautiful flute Quartet in D is Russian born flutist Svetlana Piankova.
Svetlana studied music at the College of Music,St. Petersburg, Moscow State Conservatoire and Massey University-College
of Education. She has performed with the Russian State TV and Radio Orchestra, Moscow State Opera and Ballet Theatre,
and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. Since moving to New Zealand in 2000, she has performed in chamber music ensembles, as
a soloist and with the NGC Wellington Sinfonia.
Piano Trio no.4 in E minor, Dumky" - Dvorak
Dvorak’s Piano Trio in E minor is a work full of surprises and changes of mood and colour. It is entitled The Dumky as
it is a set of six Dumka (Ukranian folksongs of a dreamy, lyrical nature which contain many varying episodes).It
encompasses numerous shades of meaning and every facet of emotion from slow, sombre and serene to fast, lively and
exuberant.
