Wellington and other town landmarks feature in NZ Landscape Architects Awards
Taranaki Wharf and Oriental Parade in Wellington, Hastings, Waitara and Waihi feature in the New Zealand landscape
architects awards to be held in Christchurch in April.
The Hastings CBD, Waitara and Waihi township entries are for major town redevelopments.
Taranaki Wharf and Oriental Bay waterfront in Wellington are up for awards along with Mount Maunganui Beach.
A record 110 entries are in line for the New Zealand Pride of Place Landscape Awards to be held on April 5.
Sixty entries are entered the landscape architecture section and 50 for the landscape industries section.
Projects range throughout the country from Auckland to Dunedin.
Previous winners include such key public landscapes as the Arrowtown town centre development, Quay Park, on Auckland's
waterfront, indigenous ecosystems handbooks for Christchurch, Papakura gateway reserve, the Wellington Botanic Gardens
duck pond, Onehunga’s town centre, the Haast Visitors Centre, and the New Plymouth foreshore walkway and development.
Jan Woodhouse (landscape architect), convenor of the design panel judges said the entries were exciting and appeared to
be of high quality.
The judging panel will travel throughout New Zealand in February to assess the entries and make their decisions.
Mark Hadlow will run the awards gala dinner and presentations in Christchurch on April 5.
The New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects have presented awards for landscape architecture for the last 15
years.
New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) president Di Lucas said New Zealand was changing rapidly in
cities, towns and in the countryside.
``It is a time of challenge for the landscape architecture profession to assist in ensuring the changes respond to the
special qualities of this country.
``These awards are an important opportunity for clients and the public to see what is current best practice in this
profession.’’
The New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects has over 400 members.
