PRESS RELEASE
GLOBAL, and all participating groups performers and artists invite you to be a part of an International initiative involving events around the world. This two-day event in Auckland is to celebrate the anniversary of the global peace protest of 15th February 2003.
On February 15th 2003 over 5 million people around the world united under the banner of ‘Stop the War’. It became a day of true global significance by raising awareness and creating a worldwide movement to resist the exploitation of our planet. The day was an inspiration, where the boundaries of class, age, race, gender, religion and economic wealth where cast aside and the world marched side by side in a show of solidarity that has never been equaled.
Two of Auckland’s most respected venues are the locations for a weekend of celebrations. With a truly varied mix of performers and participants, no genre will go untapped.
The Khuja Lounge, (‘khuja’ meaning ‘melting pot’ in Arabic) is the perfect place to celebrate the first of these two nights with its laid back friendly atmosphere, which welcomes everybody. ‘Saturday Love’ resident (Mr. Peaceful) DJ Manuel Bundy + special guest Andrew Spraggon, aka Sola Rosa, “Over-flowing with infectious, creative rhythms and beats…. …Sola Rosa will take you on a journey through the world of sound”. These two conscious minded individuals create their own inspirational vibe whilst surrounded by visual projections by Mars & lotech and graffiti artwork from Disruptiv.
The Classic continues proceedings with Indymedia’s ‘Antidote #6’, informative and inspirational film screenings that always lead to much debate. Live musical performances, guest MC / comedian Jeremy Elwood “...indefinable comedic magic...” - nzoom.com, NZ, and award winning photographic stills by John Miller. With political satire and some of KFM’s finest DJ’s to complete the celebrations. Visual projection artist will be continuing where they left off on Saturday accompanying the nights live acts and Disruptiv artwork will be on sale (proceeds going to the event). Campaign groups will be present on both nights to provide relevant information whilst maintaining the festival spirit.
‘Peace Not War’ (PNW) based in London are the initiators of this series of events around the world. The PNW double CD launch is another highlight and will be available on both nights. Listen to KFM 106.8 for a BIG taster. Artist include, Public Enemy, Ani Difranco, Massive Attack + more. Previously unreleased in N.Z. (visit http://www.peace-not-war.org/ for more details).
Worldwide event organizer ‘The Plot’ has initiated Auckland’s contribution whilst being based here for the summer. Having previously been a part of events in support of Tibetan refugees in Nepal, Burmese communities in Australia, and most recently ‘RAW Peace’, an event in London timed to coincide with the state visit of George W. Bush. ‘The Plot’ has collaborated with campaign groups, and performers in Auckland to demonstrate the global unity of artist and activists.
GLOBAL is an innovative event that will provide Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Global Peace & Justice Auckland, (GPJA), the Burmese community of Auckland and the Tibetan Association the opportunity to reflect our common interests. The anniversary of this date is an opportunity for us to demonstrate our intentions to create a world free from war exploitation and tyranny. Where famine disease and poverty are eradicated. Where inequality is obsolete and EQUAL RIGHTS = PEACE.
GPJA key organizers of last years march will be calling on all to unite again to demonstrate on the 20th March 2004, the next date for worldwide protest. The demand is not only to end the occupation of Iraq, but also, to return all N.Z. Troops home safely.
A relayed web cast is also being proposed for both nights.
Please show your support for Global, which will continue the already growing movement of awareness raising events and initiatives.
All profits from GLOBAL go to participating groups - So what better way to share a little love this Valentines weekend?
