Anthony Harper Lawyers New Years Eve Party
– in association with Red Badge Group
IT’S A REAL BLAST WITH THE BUBBLEMEN AND 4 MAN BOB
Christchurch’s Cathedral Square puts on a great time for New Years Eve.
Helping partygoers say “goodbye” to 2003 and “come on in” to 2004 are two of New Zealand’s most energetic, versatile bands. From 9.30pm, 4 Man Bob take the stage, entertaining revellers with a wide range of music. Described as “high octane”, “invigorating” and “heaps of fun”, this six-piece band will warm everyone up, to welcome in the New Year.
Then at 10.30pm, The Bubblemen build anticipation even higher until midnight when MC, Nick Henare leads the crowd counting up to midnight to the chimes of the Post Office Clock and then, for the first time, fireworks will explode off the roof of the Anthony Harper Lawyers’ building in the Square as the Cathedral Bells chime.
The possession and consumption of alcohol is banned in Cathedral Square between 6pm Wednesday 31 December and 6am on Thursday 1 January 2004. Plenty of car parking at the Kilmore Street and Farmers carparking buildings (7.30am - 11.45pm, note closing time) and the Oxford Terrace carpark is open right through from 7.30am - 12.45am).

ASB Bank Starry Nights
THERE’LL BE MUSIC IN THE AIR AND LOTS OF PICNICS EVERYWHERE
ASB Bank Starry Nights is a special night out on what many say is the best part of the Christchurch summer. In 2004 the concert airs with fabulous entertainment from Showbiz Christchurch, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and a 120 strong choir.
Showbiz Christchurch Kura Geere-Watson says Starry Nights is a highlight in their calendar. “We’ve moved to the bigger North Hagley Park this year, because of the increased crowd last year. Being outdoors, with thousands of people having a wonderful time, I don’t know who it enjoys it more, us or them?!”
The musical medley entertainment includes songs from stage hits including Hair, Evita, Guys and Dolls, Copacabana, and special preview of the next Showbiz Christchurch treat – GREASE! And there’s a special prize draw at the interval, which will see one audience member win a $2000 investment fund from ASB Bank. Starry Nights Programmes are free and you must have a programme to be in the draw.
Remember to bring a picnic or buy delicious fare from the many food stalls.
The grand finale from Showbiz Christchurch should have everyone, including the sponsor, smiling; word is it’ll be an all gold affair; a colour not dissimilar from the ASB’s colours. This is a night you will not forget!

The Press Summer Theatre Season – In Association with Anthony Harper Lawyers Presents ‘Fairyable!’
FAIRYTALES WERE NEVER LIKE THIS WHEN YOU WERE A KID!
The Court Jesters are back and this time they’re using the fairy tale as a vehicle for their unique and highly entertaining form of improvisation.
The Daffodil Garden in the Botanic Gardens is, as usual, the location for this very popular Summertimes event. If you have never experienced improvisation before, what happens is this: six actors create a different performance each time, for around 90 minutes. The key to the humour and the unexpected is the audience, because they are involved in the performance. In this case, each new fairy tale will be shaped by the audience and the actors working together.
Jeff Clark of the Court Jesters says he knows Fairyable will be out of this world.
“The Jesters have spent weeks locked in a room with only copies of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Shrek and The Princess Bride to read. When they hit the stage, who knows, anything could happen!”
Jeff says Fairyable is fast paced, fiendishly funny and frantic. They’re the only ‘f’ words he knows.
Location: Daffodil Lawns, Botanic Gardens

Time: 7pm Tues – Sun, matinees 2pm Sat-Sun and Fri 6th Feb No matinees on Sat 31st Jan, Sat 7th Feb and Sun 8th Feb

“There’ll be a bit of Beach Boys and 10cc, that sort of thing,” says Islay McLeod, CCC Events Team Leader. “It’ll be like we’re all in the islands or another tropical wonderland.”
There’ll be a “Dunk-Ya-Mate” machine so adults and children can throw balls at a target and drop their family and friends in the water. And, of course, plenty of giveaways.
Remember to bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat and a t-shirt to cover up, if things get really hot.

Rick Armstrong Motors Classical Sparks
A BRILLIANT FINALE TO THE SUMMERTIMES FESTIVAL – GOING OUT WITH A BANG!
Classical Sparks is the final major event in the Summertimes 2004 Calendar.
The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra has been entertaining audiences for more than 40 years and will be in fine form for Classical Sparks with numbers including the William Tell Overture, Ride of the Valkyries and Fanfare of the Common Man.
Mark Taddei is in his second season as the Orchestra’s Music Director. He has conducted in Europe and North America and is in constant demand as a conductor throughout NZ. Mark will conduct the CSO for Classical Sparks.
One of the talented soloists for this special evening is Canterbury’s own Ben Morrison who began playing violin at the age of four. He is currently in Year 12 at Burnside High School.
After touring with fellow Burnside student, singer Hayley Westenra in 2001, and a solo performance at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Springs, California in February 2002, Ben is looking forward to being back on stage with the CSO.
Also appearing at Classical Sparks is well known tenor, Tim Beveridge, and soprano, Viktoria Didoka soprano.
CCC Events Team Leader Islay McLeod says “ this will be a night showcasing the amazing talent we have in Canterbury.”
“The spectacular fireworks display later in the evening is the only thing that will come close to matching the magnificent performances on stage.“
The Classical Sparks fireworks display is in fact part of the performance of the concert finale – Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.
