TVNZ ANNOUNCES ITS 2004 ARTS STRATEGY
This week, TVNZ Chief Executive Officer, Ian Fraser, announced TVNZ's Arts Strategy for 2004.
As part of TVNZ's Charter commitment, the Company is placing stronger emphasis on local and international arts programming to reflect and encourage creative talent. This includes two locally produced series - a Saturday hour-long show and a Sunday evening arts information programme.
Iconic New Zealand author, Witi Ihimaera and acclaimed photographer, Marti Friedlander will be among the artists profiled under the new initiative. London-based opera star Jonathan Lemalu will be the subject of a biographical feature and the history of the Royal New Zealand Ballet will also be screened.
TV ONE will continue with its acclaimed 'World Arts' slot that showcases eclectic and unusual art documentaries from around the world. This will include the feature-length show 'Standing In The Shadows', a history of Motown and 'Easyriders, Raging Bulls', a biopic on 1970s film directors.
TVNZ will also deliver on the commitment to provide more coverage of the arts in its news programmes and on TV2 in 'Flipside'.
"We are tremendously excited about the opportunities the Charter provides us to showcase the creative endeavours of the local and international arts community to New Zealanders," explained Ian Fraser.
"Our task is to make sure that celebrating the achievement and diversity of art in all its forms becomes a measurably more satisfying, informative and fulfilling experience for our audience. We hope these and other arts-focussed programmes we have planned for 2004 will encourage appreciation of artistic expression and inspire people to embrace the tremendous amount of talent that we have in this country."
